What you would seeLo que verías

An aged vellum page, creamy and slightly uneven at the edges, seen within an open bound volume, with a sliver of the facing page at right. The right half is occupied by a single column of Gothic script in dark brown ink, with about fifteen short lines. Each line begins with a tall, narrow decorated initial in pink, blue, and gold, forming an almost continuous vertical band; at the end of many lines are small rectangular fillers with geometric patterns in the same colors and the abbreviation for a response. The names, mostly of women saints, can be made out: Mary of Egypt, Felicity, Anne, Faith, Charity, Perpetua, Agatha, Agnes, Lucy, Cecilia, Petronilla, Brigid, Scholastica, and Catherine. Around the text, on the left and lower margins, runs a delicate vine border of curling stems in blue, gold, and muted red, with ivy-like leaves and tiny bell-shaped flowers in green, orange, and white. Perched at the top are two small birds with grey backs and orange breasts. At left, a hybrid creature with a human face, a red hood and cloak, and a blue animal body rears up among the leaves. At lower right, a long pink dragon-like animal with pointed ears holds a flowing green ribbon in its mouth.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the vertical column of decorated initials and follow it downward as if it were a spine, then let your eye travel into the vine border. Notice how the solemn list of names coexists with playful creatures in the margins. The contrast between the order of the prayer and the fantasy of the border is what gives the page its life.

ContextContexto

This is folio 123v of the Hours of Charles the Noble, king of Navarre (1361–1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably acquired this book of hours, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404–05, and had his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios. It was a collaborative work: six painting styles have been identified, by Italian, French, and Netherlandish artists. The Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials planned the decoration, and his Florentine assistant Zecho was responsible for most of the borders.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Florentine assistant known as Zecho signed his name, "Zecho da Firenze," on folio 208 verso of this same manuscript — an unusual gesture for a medieval illuminator, whose work was often anonymous.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the presence of playful creatures in the margins change the experience of reading a devotional text?¿Cómo cambia la experiencia de leer un texto devocional cuando en los márgenes aparecen criaturas juguetonas?
  2. What might a long list of saints' names have meant to the person who prayed with this book every day?¿Qué podía significar una larga lista de nombres de santas para quien rezaba con este libro todos los días?
  3. If a book like this was partly made for a luxury market before having a specific owner, how does that alter our idea of a personal object?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I first notice the creamy vellum and how it still breathes after six centuries. The column of gothic script is immaculate, each initial in pink, blue and gold forming a vertical spine that holds the text like architecture. I linger on the border wrapping the margins, with winding stems and ivy-like leaves, so fragile and precise. I think about the gold and tempera on animal skin and the care needed to keep those pigments from flaking. It is devotion and craftsmanship together.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I am drawn to the contrast between the order of the text and the playful chaos of the margins. The column of female saints names is an orderly list, almost like a star catalogue, each with its luminous initial in pink, blue and gold. Around it, the foliate border expands like an orbit with birds, leaves and hybrid creatures floating weightlessly. The pinkish animal holding the green ribbon below looks like a curious comet. It is a medieval sky where the solemn and the fantastic share the same page.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This page looks like a magic book. In the middle there are many fancy letters with little pink and blue and shiny gold drawings. Around it there is a vine with leaves and tiny little flowers and two cute birds at the top. The creature with the red hood makes me giggle because it looks like a person but has a blue animal body. And below the pink dragon bites a green ribbon that flies in the wind. I feel like if I blow, the leaves will move.

  1. #1

If you count the female saints names you can read in the column, how many saints appear in the list?

    HintPista

Follow the decorated initials vertically and read the names at the end of each line, from Mary of Egypt to Catherine.

  2. #2

In the border, how many little birds with gray backs and orange breasts perch at the top?

    HintPista

Look at the upper margin of the border, among the blue and gold stems.

  3. #3

What wavy green object does the pinkish animal in the lower right corner hold in its mouth?

    HintPista

Find the pointy-eared dragon at the bottom right and notice what comes out of its snout.
