What you would seeLo que verías

A page of ivory-toned vellum fills the frame, seen almost straight on, with the fore-edge of the bound volume at right and a sliver of the facing page at left. On the left-center sits a column of Latin text, hand-written in dark ink in regular lines of Gothic script. Five decorated initials interrupt the block: squared capitals in blue, pink, orange, and gold, traced with fine white filigree. Between paragraphs, narrow horizontal bars in the same brilliant colors and gold mark pauses like small illuminated signals. Around the text grows a painted vine. It rises from a dark central vertical stem with gilded terminals, then branches into curving blue, green, and pink tendrils that form a near-symmetrical canopy across the top and spill down the right and lower margins. Gray serrated leaves, tiny flowers, buds in red, green, and turquoise, and star-like flecks of gold catch the light. Two playful hybrid creatures inhabit the margins. At right, a blue figure in a red hat balances on a golden wheel, trailing a long red tail. At lower left, another wears a pointed hat, has a pink torso and a wavy green tail, and holds sticks hung with little bells. A handwritten “208” appears at upper right. Light spotting, uneven edges, and gentle wear show the age of handled parchment.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the orderly block of text, then follow the vine growing from the central vertical line into the margins. Notice how that plant turns reading into a small garden. Finally, look for the two hybrid creatures: their bright hats and tails change the page from a solemn prayer into something playful.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this leaf comes from the Hours of Charles the Noble, king of Navarre (1361–1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. Charles likely acquired the already luxurious book during a trip to Paris in 1404–05, rather than commissioning it from a single workshop, and had his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios. The volume was a collaborative production involving six painting styles — Italian, French, and Netherlandish. The Bolognese artist known as the Master of the Brussels Initials planned and decorated the book and painted seventeen large miniatures.

Curious detailDato curioso

The principal assistant, the Florentine painter in charge of most of the borders, signed his name as “Zecho” da Firenze on folio 208 verso — an unusually personal trace left by a medieval illuminator in a book made by many hands.

The conservatorLa restauradora

What moves me most is the ivory toned vellum, with its uneven edge and the soft stains left by time and by hands turning pages. The column of gothic script is drawn with a steady hand, but look at the five square initials in blue, pink, orange and gold, crossed by very fine white filigree, and the narrow horizontal bars that separate paragraphs. The foliated border grows from a dark central stem with golden tips and opens into blue and green tendrils. Everything is made with tempera and gold leaf on parchment.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

If you look closely, this folio is a portable sky. The ivory vellum is the background and on it the gold star shaped sparkles scattered through the border work like tiny constellations. They follow the curving tendrils that branch from the dark central stem, and among the gray leaves and the red and turquoise buds luminous dots guide the eye like stars. Even the number 208 written at the top right recalls how we chart the sky, leaf by leaf, night by night.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

There are little monsters hiding! On the right there is a blue one with a red hat balancing on a golden wheel and it has a super long red tail. Down on the left there is another one with a pointy hat, a pink belly and a green tail like a little snake, holding sticks with bells that must go jingle jingle. I love how the whole page is hugged by a vine with gray little leaves, tiny flowers and golden stars that shine. It feels like the serious letters in the middle are guarded by playful guardians.
