What you would seeLo que verías

A single page of a bound manuscript fills the frame, slightly curved at the spine on the left and cut by the facing page on the right. On the warm, cream-colored vellum, a column of dark Gothic script occupies the right half: regular, dense lines broken by large illuminated initials in blue, pink, orange and gold, and by small red and blue line-fillers. The first initial contains green and pink foliate ornament. Along the left margin, a long vertical ivy stem in blue and gold rises and falls the height of the text, branching into curling tendrils with pointed leaves, tiny red, green and gold buds, butterflies and birds scattered across the whole border. At top perches a small grey-brown bird; at lower left, a greenish one. To the left of the text stands a fantastical bird with a red crest, blue beak, green-and-ochre body and bright red legs. At the bottom, a jester-like figure in a red tunic and blue pointed hat, with the green body of a horse, blows a long horn among the leaves. The gold catches the light without glare; the surface shows the soft grain of vellum and the crisp edge of tempera. In the upper left corner, a later hand has written “307.”

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the vertical stem of ivy from top to bottom, as if it were the margin's spine. Then read —even without understanding the Latin— the rhythm of the large initials and the decorated line-fillers. Finally, look for the small animals among the leaves: the page is read as much with the eye as with the prayer.

ContextContexto

This is folio 152v of the Book of Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361–1425), made in Paris around 1405, in ink, tempera and gold on vellum, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The source notes that the king probably acquired the volume, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404–05, and that his coat of arms was painted on no fewer than twenty folios. Six painting styles have been identified in the codex —two Italian, two French and two Netherlandish. Its planning and decoration are attributed to the Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials, with the Florentine “Zecho” da Firenze as a principal assistant.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Florentine assistant signed his name, “Zecho” da Firenze, on folio 208 verso —an unusual signature in a luxury manuscript of this period, where most illuminators remain anonymous.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

I look at this creamy vellum on folio 152v and think about the hand that prepared the skin to receive ink, tempera and gold leaf. The gold does not shine evenly, it catches light like tiny scales and shows the soft texture of the parchment. I notice the large illuminated initials in blue, pink and orange with touches of gold, and the ivy border with curling tendrils, leaves, butterflies and birds. Below, the fantastic bird and the jester centaur show how well the pigments have held.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I love how this folio 152v feels like a portable night sky. The gold leaf on the creamy vellum sparkles like tiny constellations, while the deep blue of the initials and the ivy border reminds me of the firmament at dusk. I count three birds among curling tendrils and butterflies, like planets in orbit. The fantastic bird with its red crest and the jester centaur blowing a horn become my wayward comets crossing the margin.

This page looks like a secret garden! I see big letters in blue, pink and orange with shiny gold that sparkles. Around them there is a blue vine with little leaves, butterflies and three little birds. My favorite is the fantastic green and ochre bird with a red crest and blue beak, it looks like a dinosaur bird! At the bottom there is a jester with a blue pointy hat who is half green horse and plays a long horn. I want to blow that horn too!

It is not part of the medieval gothic script, it is a small later annotation.
