What you would seeLo que verías
The image shows an illuminated page from an open book, photographed from the front at a slight angle. On the left, the previous page appears out of focus, and yellowed ribbons peek out at the top; on the right is the thick, rough edge of dozens of leaves of aged, ivory-colored vellum. In the upper left center, inside a gold and multicolored frame, is the main miniature: Christ, with a gold halo, a long gray-violet robe, and a lowered, resigned expression, carries a wooden cross on his shoulder as he leaves a pink city with red, blue, and green towers. Several men surround and push him, wearing short brown, red, and blue garments, pale hose, and making agitated gestures; one pulls at him while others raise their hands against a rocky background beneath a very pale sky. Below are three lines of dark Gothic script, a large blue and pink initial containing a small gold figure, and another smaller initial. The entire right and lower margins overflow with curling blue, red, green, and gold foliage, flowers, gold dots, insects, colorful birds, small nude children, a man with a staff, and, centered at the bottom, a quartered heraldic shield in red, blue, and gold. The even light, without strong shadows, brings out the matte glow of the gold and the soft, lightly stained texture of the parchment.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with Christ at the center of the miniature, in a long, muted robe beneath the weight of the cross, and then follow the pushing hands and raised arms of the men around him. Let your eye travel from there to the margins, where the mood completely changes. The tiny figures, birds, and playful leaves change how we read the pain of the main scene.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this is folio 170 verso from the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), made around 1405 in Paris in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. Books of hours were private prayer books widely owned by the late medieval European nobility. The source notes that Charles probably acquired his, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404-05, and had his coat of arms painted on twenty folios. It was not the work of a single artist: six styles are distinguished, by two Italians, two Frenchmen, and two Netherlanders. The Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials coordinated the decoration and painted seventeen large miniatures; his Florentine assistant, Zecho, signed another folio. It is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Curious detailDato curioso
The Florentine assistant left his signature, “Zecho da Firenze,” on folio 208 verso of the same manuscript, an unusual and precious clue in a book where most artists remain anonymous.

If you look closely, what moves me most is the material itself. This is vellum, prepared skin, and it has held tempera and gold for over six hundred years. Notice the soft matte shine of the gold on the frame and the dots in the border, and the gentle staining of the aged parchment. I focus on the shield at the bottom, added later for Charles the Noble, and on the thick edge of pages on the right. Everything speaks of luxury made to last, with several hands working in Paris around 1405.

I look at the sky in the miniature: it is pale, almost empty, as if holding its breath before something solemn. But my eye drifts to the border, which is a universe of its own. There is curling foliage in blue, red and green dotted with gold that looks like stars. I see colorful birds, tiny insects and little naked children climbing among the vines. It is like a miniature firmament surrounding the sacred scene, where the earthly and the heavenly blend in a single border lit with gold.

The border is full of hidden things! If you follow the little vines going up and down, you find colorful birds, tiny bugs and little naked kids who look like they are playing hide and seek. At the top there is a big cross carried by a man in a grayish purple robe with a golden circle on his head. Some men are pushing and pulling him. I love counting everything around and looking for the shield at the bottom that looks like a little square with red, blue and gold.
