The text block occupies the upper right of the main page: about fifteen lines of dense Gothic script in dark brown-black ink, with Latin words tightly spaced. Several enlarged initials interrupt the lines, painted in blue, pink, red, and gold with white patterning, while short decorated line-fillers in pink, blue, and gold close some lines. A tall ornamental border runs down the left margin and spreads across the top and bottom. From a slender blue and gold stem grow curling vines, pointed ivy-like leaves in blue, brown, and gold, tiny bell-shaped flowers, dots, and starry tendrils. Perched at the top is a small pale bird with a dark beak. Midway down stands a long-necked scarlet bird with sweeping wings, balanced on a pink nest-like form beside crossed sticks. At the bottom left another small greenish bird perches among leaves; at the bottom right, a green four-legged creature with a human torso in red and blue rears up, as if playing or sounding a wind instrument.

This is folio 176v, a text page from the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. Books of hours were luxury volumes for private devotion. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably acquired this one, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404-05, and had his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios. Six painting styles have been identified in the codex — Italian, French, and Netherlandish. Its planner was the Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials; his Florentine assistant signed himself “Zecho” da Firenze.

I pause on the warm cream vellum, with edges softly darkened by time and that faint 362 inscribed at the top left. I look at the block of about fifteen lines in very dark brown gothic script, broken by initials in blue, pink, red and gold with white highlights. What holds my attention most is the left border: thin blue and gold stems, ivy-like leaves, little bell-shaped flowers and starry tendrils. The gold still shines after six hundred years over tempera and ink, and that speaks of a very careful Parisian technique from around 1405.

I see this page as a miniature night sky. The dark background around the book makes the pale vellum stand out like a lit window. The ornamental border feels like a constellation: stems curving like orbits, leaves and little flowers like stars, and those four living beings placed like planets. At the top a pale little bird, in the middle a scarlet long-necked bird on a pinkish shape, below a greenish bird and the green hybrid creature with a human torso in red and blue. Everything revolves around the text, like an orderly system.

This page looks like a magic book with hiding places! The text is all squeezed together at the top right and has big letters in blue, pink, red and gold with little white dots. But the fun part is on the left edge, where there is a vine with leaves and tiny flowers going up and down. There are three little birds: a pale one at the top, a red one with a long neck in the middle and a green one at the bottom. And at the very bottom there is a little green monster with four legs and a person in red and blue clothes playing like a flute. I like to find them one by one.
