This leaf belongs to the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361–1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles likely acquired the already-made book, perhaps produced for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404–05, and had his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios. Six painting styles have been identified, by Italian, French, and Netherlandish artists. The Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials planned the decoration and painted seventeen large miniatures.

There are three small birds among the leaves, with brown, gray and orange feathers, and an orange and black butterfly that looks like it is flying near the bottom.
