The image shows a single vertical page from a bound parchment book, photographed against a dark ground. At the far left a narrow strip of stacked earlier leaves is visible; at the far right, a sliver of the facing page shows color and part of a miniature. The leaf itself is warm, creamy vellum with softly darkened edges, small stains, pricking and a handwritten '374' at the upper left. On the right, a neat block of dark brown Gothic script fills about a dozen lines, with red and blue initials and a small flower at the end of the text. Below it, two short decorated bars in blue, red, pink and gold frame the rubric 'Ad vesperas' in larger display script. Around the text runs an exuberant border: a tall blue stem with curling tendrils, spiky ivy leaves in blue, red, green and burnished gold, tiny buds and bell-shaped flowers. In the left margin a brown hare stands upright, wrapped in a green cloak and holding a long staff. Along the bottom, a hybrid creature with a man's torso in a blue tunic and red-and-green cap and a pink pig-like body blows or brandishes a long instrument, near butterflies and floral sprigs. The effect is delicate, dense and playful.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the compact block of writing and then let your eye follow the tall blue stem into the margins. Notice how the decoration does not illustrate the prayer so much as play around it. The two hybrids, one at the upper left and one at the bottom, change a solemn page into something witty and slightly unruly.

ContextContexto

This is folio 191v, a text page from the Hours of Charles the Noble, king of Navarre (1361-1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles, who was born in France, probably acquired the book, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404-05, and had his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios. It was a collaborative production involving six painting styles, by two Italians, two Frenchmen, and two Netherlanders. The Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials planned and decorated the book.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Florentine assistant known as Zecho da Firenze, responsible for most of the borders, signed his name on folio 208 verso, an unusual survival that lets us name one of the hands behind pages like this one.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Why place comic, invented creatures in the margins of a book meant for prayer?¿Por qué colocar criaturas cómicas e inventadas en los márgenes de un libro destinado a la oración?
  2. How does the border change the way you read, or fail to read, the Latin text at the center?¿Cómo cambia el borde tu manera de leer, o de no poder leer, el texto en latín del centro?
  3. What does such a small, portable, lavish object tell us about private devotion and status around 1400?¿Qué nos dice un objeto tan pequeño, portátil y lujoso sobre la devoción privada y el estatus hacia 1400?

If you look closely, notice the vellum: that warm, creamy tone, like #eadfc4, but with slightly darkened edges and little age spots. See the handwritten «374» at the top left and how the dark brown gothic script stays so orderly. What matters most to me are those borders: the intense blue, the red, the burnished gold that still shines, and those little ivy leaves. Everything is made on vellum with ink, tempera and gold. It is both fragile and dense.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This page is like an orderly night sky. The text block is the central constellation, with its red and blue initials like guiding stars. Around it, the border is an exuberant orbit: a tall blue stem curling with tendrils, leaves and bell-shaped flowers in gold. And in the margins, like mischievous comets, appears the standing hare in a green cloak with a staff, and below that hybrid being with a human torso and pinkish body playing an instrument. It is all play and devotion spinning together.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

Look at the hare! It is standing on the left side, it is brown and wears a green cloak and a long staff, like it is going for a walk. Down below there is a weird little man, half person with a red and green hat and blue tunic, half like a pink piglet, and he is playing something! There are lots of little leaves in blue, red and green with shiny gold and little flowers. And in the middle there are many brown letters with some big red and blue letters. At the end it says Ad vesperas in bigger letters.
