At the lower right, beneath the text, a fantastic hybrid beast in vivid blue with an orange collar and underbelly, small horns and a long tail, prowls with outstretched claws. Two small naturalistic birds in brown and yellow perch on the vine, one higher and one lower. The vellum is warm cream with slight age toning and a softly undulating fore-edge. Even lighting emphasizes the contrast between matte parchment, glossy gold and saturated pigments.

This folio comes from the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), a book of hours made around 1405 in Paris in ink, tempera and gold on vellum. The manuscript is a collaborative work showing six distinct painting styles attributed to Italian, French and Netherlandish artists. The planning and seventeen large miniatures are credited to a Bolognese illuminator known as the Master of the Brussels Initials, with borders largely by his Florentine assistant who signed himself Zecho da Firenze on folio 208v.
