This is folio 20r, a text page from the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361–1425), made in Paris around 1405 and now at the Cleveland Museum of Art. It was executed in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum by the Master of the Brussels Initials and associates. According to the museum, Charles highly prized the volume and had his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios. He probably did not commission it directly, but acquired it, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404–05. Six painting styles — Italian, French, and Netherlandish — have been identified in the codex.

I focus on the warm cream vellum, matte and slightly stained, with edges darkened by handling and that gentle curve toward the spine casting a shadow on the right. The block of text in reddish brown ink is very compact, in regular gothic script with frequent abbreviations. What fascinates me is the border: a slender golden stem supporting blue vines, tiny red, green and gold leaves, and gold leaf applied with tempera that still shines. Everything handmade, layer by layer, with delicate pigments that have survived for more than six centuries.
