ink, tempera, and gold on vellum

What you would seeLo que verías

A single vellum leaf, creamy and lightly mottled with age, its edges soft and slightly cockled, viewed straight on with a glimpse of the bound fore-edge on the right. A block of Latin prayer text in dense black gothic script occupies the right half, ruled with faint red lines and beginning with a small decorated initial at the top. Framing the text is an elaborate T-shaped border: a slender dark stem, almost black with hints of gold, curls into delicate tendrils of slate blue and olive. From it sprout spiky ivy leaves in gold, blue and vermilion, and tiny bell-shaped blossoms in red, yellow and green highlighted with burnished gold. Even, diffuse light reveals the matte tempera and the metallic glint. On the left margin, midway up, a small standing figure wears a tall blue cap, a green tunic and a red round shield, holding a staff like a watchman or wild man; his bare feet dangle among the vines. At the lower right, a pale pink quadruped with a long curling tail, resembling a monkey or grotesque, bends over an open miniature book as if reading or gnawing it. Minute butterflies in orange, black and pale blue hover among the foliage. The background is the bare parchment itself, leaving the profuse marginalia to pop with color and fine linear detail.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the large T-shaped vine that anchors and frames the prayer, then let your eye wander the margins. Look closely at the tiny armed figure on the left and the pink beast with a book at the bottom, and notice how butterflies and gold bells turn devotion into a lively garden.

ContextContexto

This is a folio from the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), dated to about 1405 and made in Paris, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The French-born king had his coat of arms painted on twenty folios, showing how highly he valued the volume. He probably did not commission it directly but acquired it ready-made on the luxury market during a trip to Paris in 1404-1405. The codex is a collaborative work showing six distinct painting styles by Italian, French and Netherlandish artists. The overall design and seventeen large miniatures are attributed to the Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials, while most borders are by his Florentine associate who signed himself Zecho da Firenze on folio 208 verso; this folio 201v exemplifies that border style.

Curious detailDato curioso

Books of hours were private prayer books for wealthy laypeople, and their margins were often filled with drôleries — whimsical, sometimes satirical grotesques — that offered medieval readers both delight and moralizing distraction from the sacred text.

I focus on the T-shaped border framing the gothic text and how the gold still keeps its shine despite the yellowish and porous vellum. I notice the tempera pigments: the grayish blue, the olive green and the vermilion of the ivy leaves, and the bell-shaped fruits with touches of gold leaf. The wavy and stained edges speak of time passed since Paris around 1405. This page from the Book of Hours of Charles the Noble shows collaborative work by six hands and here the style of the Florentine Zecho da Firenze is recognized.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

To me this vellum is like a clear night sky. The light background of the parchment makes constellations of color stand out: the tiny butterflies in orange and pale blue look like shooting stars among the dark foliage. The vertical border recalls the Milky Way crossing the page, with its fine tendrils and golden sparkles. Even the two marginal figures, the one with the pointed blue cap and the pinkish creature with a book, seem like observers of the cosmos. It is a private devotion manuscript made in Paris around 1405 that invites calm looking at details.

I love looking for hidden little animals! I found tiny butterflies in orange, black and light blue flying among spiky golden and blue leaves. At the bottom there is a pink creature with a long tail that looks like a little monkey biting a tiny book. Above, on the left, there is a little person with a pointy blue hat, green tunic and red shield holding a staff. Everything is around a black text with pretty letters. The border looks like a magic vine growing in a T shape on an old yellowish page.

¡Me encanta buscar animalitos escondidos!
