The light is even, emphasizing the matte skin of the vellum, the crisp ink, and the flat, jewel-like touches of color and gold.

This is folio 207v of the Book of Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361–1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably did not commission it from a single workshop; he may have acquired it, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404–05. His coat of arms appears on no fewer than twenty folios. Six painting styles have been identified in the volume—Italian, French, and Netherlandish. The Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials planned the decoration and painted seventeen large miniatures.

This page looks like a garden with hidden bugs! The text is in the middle, very straight and brown, with little blue, pink and gold letters at the start of lines. But the fun part is all around, in the little branches that climb up and down with green, orange and blue leaves. At the top there is a bird with a yellow belly. In the middle there is a green monster with a red crest opening its beak. Below another bird watches a black insect and a strange puppy with a spiky pink head walks next to a tiny closed blue book. I want to keep hunting for more butterflies!
