What you would seeLo que verías

A single vellum page fills the frame, slightly curved toward the binding at the left and showing the fore-edge of other leaves at the right. On its creamy, aged surface, a narrow column of dark Gothic script occupies the left half, with line endings and paragraph marks in red, blue, pink, and patterned gold. Several initials are enlarged and brightly painted. The right half is almost entirely margin, yet it is crowded with decoration: from the first line a large initial I descends the whole column, rimmed in blue and gold, and from it sprout thin curling vines with small leaves in green, orange, pink, and blue, dotted with shining gold ivy leaves. Among the tendrils perch small birds at upper and lower right. On the right edge a hybrid creature rears up, with a red hooded head and torso, a green face, and long blue animal legs ending in claws. At bottom left two entwined figures in red and green struggle or wrestle over a dark round form. The ink is fine and crisp, the paint flat but luminous, and the parchment shows stains, soft shadows, and the number 477 at top right.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the column of text and its colored initials, then let your eye travel into the margins. Notice how the decoration grows out of the large I and turns writing into a kind of garden. The hybrid creatures seem playful at first, but their tense gestures change the devotional calm of the page.

ContextContexto

This is folio 213r of the Hours of Charles the Noble, king of Navarre (1361–1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably acquired the book, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404–05, rather than commissioning it directly. His coat of arms was painted on no fewer than twenty folios. Six painting styles have been identified, by Italian, French, and Netherlandish artists. The Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials planned the decoration, and his Florentine assistant signed himself “Zecho” da Firenze.

I focus on the material: creamy vellum, slightly curved toward the binding on the left, with age spots and the edge of other leaves visible on the right. On the left runs the column of dark gothic script with touches of red, blue, pink and decorated gold; on the right, the almost empty margin fills with a large I in blue and gold sprouting curling stems with little leaves in green, orange, pink and blue and golden ivy. Notice the fine ink and the flat yet luminous paint. It is ink, tempera and gold on vellum, made in Paris around 1405.

This page is like a small night sky. The right margin is the firmament where plant constellations float: fine stems swirling like orbits and golden ivy leaves shining like stars over the creamy vellum. I see little birds perched among the branches at top and bottom right, as if migrating between those stems. Even the large I running down the column looks like a meridian ordering space. Everything was painted in tempera and gold around 1405 for a devotional book of hours.

This leaf is full of hidden things! On the right edge there is a funny creature with a red hood, green face and long blue legs with claws, as if jumping. At top and bottom there are little birds among tiny leaves in green, orange, pink and blue and shiny golden leaves. Down on the left two little figures in red and green hug and wrestle over a dark little ball. And in the middle of it all, the giant blue and gold letter I slides down very long, like a slide for the little birds.
