This is folio 214v of the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), made in Paris around 1405 with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably acquired the book, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404-05, and had his coat of arms painted on at least twenty folios. It was a collaborative work: six painting styles have been identified, by Italian, French, and Netherlandish artists, coordinated by the Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials.

As a conservator I focus on the yellowish vellum with irregular edges and soft texture that shows the passage of time. I look at the block of gothic text in dark brown ink with initials in blue pink and gold and the line fillers in red and gold. I love the marginal vine with curling stems ivy leaves stars and touches of gold and the number 440 at the top that recalls its life as a handled and catalogued object.

As an amateur astronomer I am drawn to the flecks of gold leaf among the blue and copper vine on the left and bottom. Those dots and little stars on the pale vellum remind me of tiny constellations around the gothic text. I see the little birds with yellow grey and orange plumage perched among very fine black tendrils and butterflies as if orbiting the block of writing. The whole margin feels like a playful little night sky.

I am the eight year old and what I love most are the hidden little animals! There are yellow and orange birdies among ivy leaves and little flowers with tiny flags. On the left there is a funny creature with a pointy red hat blue ribbons a pink wing and a long green body and at the bottom a jester with a blue hood playing a string instrument on something red like a heart. There are also butterflies flying and it all looks like a secret garden around the letters.
