In the left margin, a blue, long-limbed hybrid creature with a pink headdress bends over, holding a small vessel. Near the top is a dark butterfly with orange spots; below are small birds in gray, green, and red. At the lower right, another hybrid — red above, green and animal-like below, wearing a tall blue and pink pointed hat — draws a longbow. The opposite page is only partly visible at the right edge, slightly out of focus. The overall effect is fine, flat, and luminous, with parchment grain and the sheen of gold visible on close looking.

This is folio 219v of the Book of Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably did not commission it from a single workshop; he may have acquired it, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404-05, and had his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios. Six painting styles have been identified in the codex, by Italian, French, and Netherlandish artists. The Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials planned and decorated the book.
