The image shows a single cream-colored vellum page photographed against a dark background, with the edge of another page visible at right. A handwritten number, “466,” sits in the upper left corner. The central block of Latin text, in dark brown Gothic script, occupies the right half; its short, even lines leave wide margins filled with decoration. A tall initial in the form of an I runs almost the full height of the text block along the left margin. Its shaft combines blue, pink, and gold segments with vegetal motifs and acts as the stem from which fine blue and black vines branch out, bearing gold, red, green, and blue leaves, tiny flowers, and berries. Three smaller initials — blue and pink with white filigree — open individual verses. Hybrid creatures wander around the text: near the top left, a bird with green and orange plumage; midway down, a figure with a blue-and-pink human torso, a green mermaid-like tail, and a gold object in one hand; lower down, a small brown-and-orange bird perched on a branch; and at the bottom right, a red four-legged animal with a long blue neck bending toward a gold plant. The surface shows folds, faint stains, and the irregular edges of aged vellum.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the column of text, then follow the tall initial I downward as if it were a stem. Notice how the border grows away from the writing and fills the margins. The hybrid creatures at the left and bottom change the page: what first seems like solemn prayer becomes also a playful bestiary.

ContextContexto

This is folio 224v, a text page from the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361–1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The source notes that Charles prized the volume enough to have his coat of arms painted on at least twenty folios, and that he probably acquired it, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404–05. It was a collaborative production involving six painting styles — Italian, French, and Netherlandish — directed by the Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials. A book of hours was a private devotional book; the specific occasion for this page is not stated in the source.

I pause on the material side of this folio 224v from the Hours of Charles the Noble. It is cream colored vellum photographed on a dark background, with ink, tempera and gold leaf applied in Paris around 1405. I see the parchment with subtle creases, light stains and irregular edges from age. The large I shaped initial combines blue, pink and gold and supports thin branches with leaves and berries. The gold catches light and protects the surface, yet it also reveals the natural wear of the aged support.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at this page as a small ordered sky. The block of Latin text in gothic script fills the right half and leaves wide margins crowded with vegetal constellations. The large initial on the left margin acts like a meridian from which blue and black vines sprout with gold, red, green and blue leaves. Three smaller initials open the verses. At the top the handwritten number 466 marks the coordinate of the folio within a book of hours for private devotion made for the Parisian luxury market.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This page hides a zoo in the borders! The serious text is in the middle but around it there are tangled branches and curious animals that seem to play hide and seek. At the top left there is a green and orange bird, lower down a figure with a blue and pink human half and a green mermaid tail holding something golden, then a little brown bird and in the corner a red animal with a long blue neck sniffing a plant. Everything is painted with many bright colors on the light parchment.

  1. #1

If you look carefully, how many small blue and pink initials with white filigree open the verses besides the large I?

    HintPista

Look inside the brown text block, not in the decorated borders, and search for letters that start each short line.

  2. #2

In the upper left corner of the parchment, what handwritten number appears?

    HintPista

Look at the very top, on the cream background and outside the colorful decoration.

  3. #3

In the lower right corner, what four legged animal with a long blue neck and red body leans toward a golden plant?

    HintPista

Follow the vegetal border down to the bottom and look for the largest creature near the lower right edge.
