The surface is warm cream, uneven and softly luminous. At centre-left is a compact block of Gothic script in dark brown and red ink, in short, regular lines. At the start of several lines are decorated initials in deep blue, pink, red and burnished gold, with small geometric or foliate patterns inside. Around the text, especially along the right side and across the top and bottom, spreads a delicate border of thin, curling vines in blue, green, pink and gold, dotted with tiny leaves, flowers and buds. Within this vegetation appear small birds, a butterfly with dark wings, and two hybrid creatures with human-like upper bodies, animal legs and long tails, wearing bright clothing and pointed hats. In the upper right corner is handwritten the number "495"; at lower right, "242." The contrast between the orderly, sober text and the lively, colourful margin is striking.

This is folio 242r of the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera and gold on vellum, now at the Cleveland Museum of Art. According to the museum, Charles probably acquired the book of hours, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404-05, and had his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios. It was a collaborative work: six painting styles have been identified, by Italian, French and Netherlandish artists, led by the Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials.
