This is folio 288v of the Hours of Charles the Noble, king of Navarre (1361–1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably acquired the book, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404–05, and had his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios. It was a collaborative work: six painting styles, by Italian, French, and Netherlandish artists, have been identified. The identification of the saint as St. Hervard is uncertain, as the question mark in the source title indicates.

I focus on the material: ivory-toned vellum, matte and soft, still with slightly irregular edges. The brown and red ink of the gothic script sits firmly, but what vibrates is the historiated initial: deep blue, pink and burnished gold that catches the light. That green background with red and gold touches is applied in very fine tempera. The delicate marginal vines with leaves, birds and a hybrid creature speak to me of a collective work made in Paris around 1405, with six different hands working tempera and gold with extraordinary precision.

I look for skies and here there are painted constellations. On the vertical band to the left I see two six-pointed stars that seem to guide the reading like celestial markers in the margin. The gold background behind the saint is like a solid, eternal firmament, while the green with red and gold motifs suggests an ordered cosmos. That little red book with white marks held by the figure could be a calendar. Everything on this folio 288v, with its handwritten number at the top, reminds me how we once measured time with books and stars.

There are so many little animals hiding! I love finding them among the green, red and blue vines that surround the letters. At the top there is a little green monster with orange wings and at the bottom a pink one with a blue cape and red hood, like it is wearing a costume! In the center, inside a big blue and gold letter, there is a man with a halo holding a tiny red book and looking like he is praying. And if you look closely, there are tiny birds flying everywhere among the shiny gold.
