What you would seeLo que verías
Seen straight on, a single vellum folio with slightly wavy edges and warm creamy parchment tone fills the frame, shown as an open bound volume with its spine just visible on the left. Near the middle of the page, a historiated initial stands out: within a circular frame of blue and burnished gold, Saint Agnes appears with a pale face and a golden halo, wearing a soft lavender-blue long-sleeved gown and holding a white lamb against her chest, set against a diapered green and gold background. Gothic script in black ink with red rubrics flows in two uneven blocks around the miniature, with illuminated initials in red and blue heightened with gold. The entire margin is overtaken by a luxuriant border: a vertical stem in red and blue studded with star-shaped gold and blue ornaments sprouts delicate curling tendrils, ivy leaves in green, gold and pink, glittering dots and tiny creatures such as birds and butterflies. At the edges, drolleries animate the border: a small bird at the top, a hooded pink and green hybrid on the mid-left, and at the bottom a skeletal centaur in a blue hat carrying a cross. Even, museum lighting enhances the shine of gold leaf and tempera and the smooth, slightly translucent texture of the vellum, with soft shadows at the gutter.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the central historiated initial and the gentle contrast between Agnes’s pale lavender robe and the glittering gold ground, then follow the vertical vine that frames the text. Look for the marginal inhabitants — birds, butterflies, hybrid monsters and the small skeletal centaur at the bottom — which turn a prayer page into a lively, slightly uncanny world.
ContextContexto
This folio comes from the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), made around 1405 in Paris according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The precious volume was highly prized by its owner, whose coat of arms appears on twenty folios, and was probably bought ready-made for the luxury market during a trip to Paris in 1404–1405 rather than commissioned. It was a collaborative work showing six painting styles linked to two Italian, two French and two Netherlandish artists. The overall planning and seventeen large miniatures are attributed to a Bolognese artist called the Master of the Brussels Initials, assisted mainly on borders by a Florentine who signed Zecho da Firenze on folio 208 verso. This leaf depicts Saint Agnes, an early Christian martyr shown with her traditional lamb.

Curious detailDato curioso
The Hours is a collaboration of six distinct painters from three regions, and its leading artist, the Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials, is known by a name taken from another manuscript in Brussels, not from a signature in this book.

If you look closely you will see why this folio still shines after six centuries. The creamy parchment is vellum, a thin satiny skin that is slightly translucent. The miniature of Saint Agnes is painted in tempera with gold that still catches the light. Her lavender blue dress and the green and gold patterned background are remarkably preserved. What moves me most is the border: delicate tendrils, ivy leaves and tiny gold dots applied with an extremely fine brush. You can sense the hand of the Master of the Brussels Initials and his careful collaborative work.

I am fascinated by the stars in the border. They are not just decoration: they are gold and blue polylobed stars sprouting from a vertical red and blue bar that runs along the margin. They look like invented constellations for a private sky, as if the book were a portable firmament for nighttime prayer. In the center, Saint Agnes with her golden halo is like a pale moon holding a white lamb. The whole folio combines gothic text in black and red with gold that sparkles like stardust.

There is a hidden zoo in the borders! Saint Agnes hugs a fluffy white lamb as if it were her stuffed toy. Around her there are vines with little green, gold and pink leaves, and tiny butterflies and birds flying about. If you look carefully you find weird funny things: a bird at the top, on the side a monster with a pink hood and a green body, and at the bottom a skeleton with a blue hat carrying a cross. It is like a prayer book but full of secret little doodles so you never get bored.
