What you would seeLo que verías

An open book fills the frame, seen straight on, with the right-hand page, folio 306r, fully visible and only a sliver of the left page showing. On warm, cream-colored vellum, slightly darkened and stained at the edges, sits a compact block of Latin text in dark brown Gothic script, with rubrics and line-fillers in red, blue, and gold. Two large decorated initials, in pink, blue, and burnished gold, punctuate the left side of the text. Around it explodes a delicate marginal border: fine stems in blue, red, and gold curl into ivy leaves, tiny flowers, and berries that climb the right margin and spread across the top and bottom. Perched among the tendrils are small, carefully painted birds and a butterfly. On the right edge, a hybrid creature with a human torso, a red cap, a pink tunic, and green animal legs blows a long trumpet. At the bottom center, a tiny man in a green tunic and blue hose leans forward holding a stick toward a spinning top-like object. Thin red ruling lines, the folio number '627' at upper right, and the soft shadow of the gutter complete this page where reading and ornament are inseparable.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the orderly block of text, then let your eye follow the vine that invades the margins until you find the birds and hybrids. Notice how the solemn prayer and the playful marginal figures coexist without touching. The small man at the bottom changes the scale: the page stops being only something to read and becomes a world to explore.

ContextContexto

This is folio 306r of the Book of Hours of Charles the Noble, king of Navarre (1361–1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably acquired the volume, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404–05, rather than commissioning it directly. He valued it so highly that his coat of arms was painted on twenty folios. It was a collaborative work: six painting styles have been identified, by two Italian, two French, and two Netherlandish artists, coordinated by the Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Florentine assistant known as Zecho da Firenze, responsible for most of the borders, signed his name on folio 208 verso — an unusual gesture of authorship in a medieval manuscript.

Look closely at the creamy vellum, warm and slightly darkened at the edges: it is prepared skin, not paper. The Latin text is in dark brown gothic script, with fine red ruling and two large initials in pink, blue and burnished gold that still catches the light. I focus on the plant border: blue, red and gold stems with ivy, little flowers and berries, birds and a butterfly. Below, the tiny man in a green tunic and blue hose leans over the spinning top, and on the right the hybrid with a red cap blows a long trumpet. All in tempera and gold from around 1405.

What amazes me most is the order of folio 306r: a compact block of Latin text like a constellation aligned by the red ruling. The rubrics in red, blue and gold are like guide stars showing where to begin. And the margin is the universe around it: tendrils climbing up and down, perched birds and a hovering butterfly. The green-legged hybrid with a trumpet seems to announce something, while below the tiny man focuses all his gravity on a spinning top. An entire cosmos on one open book page.

There are so many hidden little drawings! The border looks like a magic vine with leaves, tiny flowers and blue and red berries climbing all around. I found little birds and a butterfly among the golden stems. On the right there is a funny creature with a red hat, pink tunic and green animal legs playing a super long trumpet. And at the bottom, teeny tiny, a little man in green and blue playing with a spinning top with a stick. I love searching for everything while the Latin text stays serious in the middle.

On the right border, what long instrument does the hybrid with a red cap and green legs play?

What colors are the two large decorated initials on the left side of the text? It is not just one.
