What you would seeLo que verías
A single vellum page from a book of hours, photographed straight on with soft, even light that reveals the creamy, smooth parchment and its faint cockling at the edges. A compact block of Gothic script sits slightly left of center, fourteen lines in dark brown-black ink with red rubrics marking liturgical divisions. The opening initial N is split, half vermilion with white filigree and half deep blue, enclosing burnished gold ivy scrollwork. Surrounding the text is a continuous ivy border that grows from a gilded brown trunk along the right margin into a delicate canopy of curling blue, gold and green leaves, fine tendrils and tiny berries. Within and around the vine are playful marginalia: at the bottom center a pink, dog-like grotesque wearing a floppy hood with jaws agape; mid-right a standing blue grotesque with a long red hood and beak, posed on hind legs; several naturalistic birds in brown, yellow and gray perched on stems, a small bird tucked at the top branch, and an orange and black butterfly near the lower right corner. The ink remains crisp, gold highlights glint on the trunk and leaves, and the upper margin shows the aged edge of the bound volume with a faint handwritten folio number.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Follow the woody vine from its rooted base up the right side and across the top, noticing how it frames the text like a living trellis. Pause on the contrasting pink and blue grotesques and see how their gazes and gestures animate the margin. Then look for the smallest naturalistic touches — birds, butterfly and gilded leaves — that shift the page from solemn prayer to a wondrous, inhabited garden.
ContextContexto
This leaf comes from the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), dated to about 1405 and made in Paris with ink, tempera and gold on vellum. The Cleveland Museum of Art notes the French-born king highly valued the volume, having his coat of arms painted on at least twenty folios. He probably acquired it ready-made for the luxury market while in Paris in 1404-05 rather than commissioning it directly. It was a collaborative project showing six distinct painting styles by Italian, French and Netherlandish artists. The overall design and seventeen large miniatures are attributed to a Bolognese painter called the Master of the Brussels Initials, with borders largely by a Florentine assistant who signed himself Zecho da Firenze on folio 208 verso.

Curious detailDato curioso
The manuscript preserves a rare signed intervention by a medieval border painter: the Florentine Zecho da Firenze inscribed his name on folio 208 verso, helping scholars identify the international team behind the book.

I pause on the creamy vellum and its soft sheen that shows how smooth the surface is and how the black ink forms fourteen very straight lines with touches of red and a large N split in blue and red with gold inside. I love the border that starts like a golden brown trunk and becomes a vine with leaves in pale blue, gold and muted green and tiny red berries. The gold, though softened by time, still catches the sidelight.

I look at this page as if it were a night sky framed, with the text in the center like an orderly constellation of fourteen lines and the border like a milky way curling along the right margin. The golden brown trunk is the axis and from it sprout blue, gold and green leaves like stars of different brightness, with red berries like distant dots. The brown and grey birds and the orange and black butterfly feel like wandering planets among those slowly turning branches.

This page is like a secret garden around the letters. Fourteen very straight little lines with a giant N in two colors, blue and red, with golden shine. And all around there is a vine that looks like a tree with little blue and gold leaves and tiny red dots. At the bottom there is a pink monster with a pointy hood opening its mouth and higher up a blue creature with a little red hat and a beak. There are also little brown birds and an orange butterfly with black spots hiding.
