To the left of the text rises a tall, elongated initial in blue, pink, and gold, from which a vine springs and surrounds almost the whole page. Slender blue and brown branches spread through the upper, left, and lower margins, laden with serrated red, blue, green, and gold leaves, small flowers, and buds. Among the foliage appear a bird perched at upper left, red-and-black butterflies, tiny shields with green, white, and red bands, and small birds below. In the left margin stands out a hybrid creature with a human-like torso, a pink headdress, and a long green body ending in a curled tail. At the bottom, a blue animal resembling a dog or fox, wearing a red cape, moves through the branches. Even light reveals the smooth, only slightly worn surface of the vellum.

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this leaf belongs to the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), a book of hours made around 1405 in Paris with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. It is attributed to the Master of the Brussels Initials and associates. The source notes that Charles probably acquired it, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404-05, and had his coat of arms painted on twenty folios. Six painting styles can be distinguished in the codex, by Italian, French, and Netherlandish artists. The exact workshop where it was purchased is not known for certain.

This page looks like a magic garden! The parchment is like cookie-colored and in the middle there are lots of tiny packed brown letters. But the fun part is around it, there is a giant vine with leaves in many colors and tiny flowers. Up top there is a little bird, there are red and black butterflies and a weird creature with a pink hat and a super long green tail that curls. Down below there is a blue puppy with a red cape walking among the branches. I love searching for all the hidden little animals.
