What you would seeLo que verías

A single vellum page, warm cream and slightly uneven at the edges, fills almost the entire view; at the right, a narrow strip of the facing page is visible, and at the far left a sliver of the book's earlier leaves. Thin pink ruled lines organize the center, where some fifteen lines of dark brown Gothic script sit in a compact rectangular block, punctuated by red initials and by a larger decorated initial at the upper left with geometric patterning in red, blue, and gold. Around the text grows an exuberant border: slender vines in electric blue, black, and muted green twist symmetrically up, down, and outward, sprouting tiny trefoil leaves, gold dots, and dozens of small bud-like forms in red, white, and green. In the left margin a hybrid figure stands in profile: a hooded head in pink, a loose blue robe, and a green, dragon-like lower body with clawed feet and a curling tail, holding a long staff with a small red-and-white banner. At the bottom, below the text, a bright red four-legged beast with bared profile, a long curling tail, and a large green wing or mantle strides to the right. The surface shows the soft matte grain of vellum, fine cracks of age, and flat, jewel-like color with touches of gold that catch the even, diffuse light.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the block of script, then let your eye follow the vine outward until you meet the marginal creatures. Notice how the decoration does not merely frame the prayer: it turns the whole page into a garden where reading and imagining happen at once.

ContextContexto

This is folio 318v, a text page from the Hours of Charles the Noble, king of Navarre (1361–1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles had his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios, but he probably did not commission the book directly; he may have acquired it, ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404–05. Six painting styles have been identified in the codex —Italian, French, and Netherlandish. The Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials planned the decoration, and his Florentine assistant, “Zecho” da Firenze, signed folio 208 verso.

Curious detailDato curioso

The book's principal assistant signed his name, “Zecho” da Firenze, on folio 208 verso —a rare, concrete trace of an individual hand inside a luxury manuscript usually described only by anonymous masters.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What changes in the act of praying when the page surrounding the words is full of playful, even unsettling creatures?¿Qué cambia en el acto de rezar cuando la página que rodea las palabras está llena de criaturas juguetonas e incluso inquietantes?
  2. What can a page with no large religious scene tell us about the daily, repeated use of a book of hours?¿Qué nos puede decir una página sin una gran escena religiosa sobre el uso diario y repetido de un libro de horas?
  3. How does the collaboration of artists from different regions show in a border that looks unified at first glance?¿Cómo se nota la colaboración de artistas de distintas regiones en una orla que, a primera vista, parece unificada?

Look at this vellum, a warm cream tone that looks soft to the touch, yet already shows fine marks of age. What holds me is the border: tendrils in electric blue and muted green curling with symmetry, sprouting tiny three-lobed leaves and dots of gold. The gold still glints against the matte parchment under even light. Notice how the compact block of about fifteen lines in dark brown is held by pale pink ruling, and how the flat, jewel-like color has stayed so clean. It is tempera and gold made to last for centuries.

If this were a sky, it would be a medieval illuminated night. The vellum background is like a pale firmament and the golden dots in the border are stars scattered among plant constellations in blue and green. I picture someone in Paris around 1405 looking at the real sky and then at this painted sky made for prayer. The marginal creatures are like comets with curled tails crossing the page. Even the order of the fifteen lines of text recalls how we arrange star charts, everything aligned to find a path.

There are monsters hiding around the letters! On the left there is one with a pink hood and a blue tunic, but its feet are green dragon feet with claws and a curly tail, and it holds a little red and white flag like it is in a parade. At the bottom there is another red monster with four legs, an angry face and a huge green cape that looks like a wing. I love how the leaves and tiny red and white buds wrap around everything like a magic vine. I want to count how many little gold dots there are.
