What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows an open page from a medieval book of hours on aged vellum in warm yellowed ivory with uneven edges and faint staining from time. A dense block of Gothic Latin text in black ink fills the center, punctuated by illuminated initials in blue, pink, red and burnished gold, each with white filigree inside and small rectangular frames. The margin is fully bordered by lush vinework: a slender golden vine trunk rising from the bottom center and branching upward, with ivy leaves in gold, muted blue and green, and tiny flowers with pink and gold petals. Among the foliage perch naturalistic birds — a gray-yellow one at the top, a yellow one at the bottom — and two playful marginal figures: on the right, a standing person in a long pink robe with a red and blue headdress, hands folded; at the bottom, a hybrid dragon with a green body, pink wings and pink head, bent over a red lectern reading an open book. Even museum lighting highlights the shine of gold and the smooth, slightly cockled texture of the vellum. The overall palette is soft and luminous, balancing sacred text with whimsical decoration.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First scan the central text and its bright initials, then follow the golden vine that structures the border from bottom to top. Pause on the two marginal figures: the dragon-reader at the base and the observer in red on the right, who turn a devotional page into a playful scene.

ContextContexto

This page belongs to the Hours of Charles the Noble, king of Navarre from 1361 to 1425, housed in the Cleveland Museum of Art. According to source data it was made around 1405 in Paris using ink, tempera and gold on vellum. It was probably not a direct commission but acquired ready-made by the king during a trip to Paris in 1404-05 for the luxury market. It is a collaborative work showing six painting styles — two Italian, two French and two Netherlandish. The artist responsible for planning and for seventeen large miniatures was a Bolognese painter known as the Master of the Brussels Initials, assisted mainly by a Florentine who signed himself Zecho da Firenze on folio 208 verso. The visible text is the opening of Psalm 8, Quoniam Domine Dominus noster.

Curious detailDato curioso

The manuscript exemplifies court taste for whimsical marginalia, where dragons and human figures share space with prayer; six different pictorial hands collaborated on the same codex, common in Parisian luxury workshops around 1400.

If you look closely, you will see the ivory yellowish vellum with age spots and irregular edges that reveal its age. The Latin text in tight black gothic script fills the center, enlivened by initials in blue, pink, red and burnished gold with white details. What moves me is the gold shining evenly under museum light and the gilded border framing everything with ivy leaves, pink flowers and birds. It is delicate work in tempera and gold that has survived for more than six centuries.

This folio from around 1405 reminds me that a book is also an ordered universe. The two-column text block is like a structured sky, and the lush vegetal border is its exuberant orbit with a slender golden vine, leaves in gold, blue and muted green and pink flowers. I enjoy spotting the naturalistic birds perched among the foliage, a yellowish gray one above and a yellow one below, like tiny constellations. For Charles the Noble, king of Navarre, this page with psalm 8 was a portable way to contemplate infinity.

There is a dragon reading! At the bottom margin, a green dragon with pink wings and pink head leans over a red lectern reading an open book. I love it because I also read like that, very focused. Up above there is a golden vine that looks like a magic creeper with ivy leaves and little pink and gold flowers, and two little birds hiding. On the right there is a person in a long pink tunic and a red and blue headdress with hands folded, as if waiting for a turn to read.
