This folio comes from the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), a book of hours made around 1405 in Paris in ink, tempera and gold on vellum. According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, the volume was highly prized by its owner, whose coat of arms appears on twenty folios. Rather than a direct commission, it was probably acquired ready-made for the luxury market during Charles’s trip to Paris in 1404-05. It is a collaborative work showing six painting styles by Italian, French and Netherlandish artists. The main artist responsible for planning the book and for seventeen large miniatures was a Bolognese painter known as the Master of the Brussels Initials, assisted principally on the borders by the Florentine Zecho da Firenze.
