The parchment is warm cream, slightly uneven at the lower corner, with a faint handwritten number at the upper right. At the left-center sits a compact block of dark brown-black Gothic script in about twelve lines, interrupted by rubricated touches and by large decorated initials in rose, blue, green, and burnished gold. From one initial a vertical and horizontal bar extends in blue, pink, and gold, turning the text frame into a branching plant. Fine tendrils curl across all four margins, bearing three- and five-lobed leaves in blue, green, orange, and pink, tiny red berries, and many small gold disks that glitter like fruit. In the right margin a green dragon-like creature with a long curling tail, pink tongue, and spiny back rears among the vines. Small birds perch at the upper right, lower left, and lower right. Along the bottom, a figure in a red tunic, blue hose, and pointed pink hood trots beneath a shoulder-pole, carrying a patterned container from each hand.

This is folio 84 recto of the Hours of Charles the Noble, king of Navarre (1361–1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. Books of hours were luxury prayer books for private devotion. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably acquired this volume, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404–05, and had his coat of arms painted on twenty folios. The decoration was collaborative: six painting styles have been identified, by Italian, French, and Netherlandish artists. The Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials planned the book and painted seventeen large miniatures; his Florentine assistant Zecho signed another folio.

The gothic script block sits center-left, about twelve lines in dark brown ink with touches of red and large initials in pink, blue, green and burnished gold. I love how the gold shines among the tendrils: little golden discs like fruits and a blue, pink and gold bar that grows from an initial and turns into a plant. It is fragile, luminous, made to last.

There are also tiny birds at the top and bottom, as if they were playing hide and seek. Down below there is a little person in a red tunic, blue leggings and a pointy pink hood carrying two little buckets hanging from a pole on the shoulder. The text in the middle looks like a secret block with colorful letters. I want to count the leaves!
