What you would seeLo que verías
A single vellum folio with slightly cockled edges and a warm, creamy parchment tone occupies the frame, its surface covered by a compact block of Gothic script in black ink with rubricated red lines, arranged in a neat, justified column. Three decorated initials punctuate the text: a blue Q with red penwork, and S and B initials divided in bright pink and blue, filled with white vine scrolls and burnished gold leaf that catches the light. The Latin text is abbreviated in the medieval manner, written in a precise, angular hand. Enclosing the text is an elaborate border of ivy-like rinceaux: a slender dark-blue trunk runs vertically along the inner margin, sprouting delicate tendrils tipped with tiny gold, blue and pink ivy leaves and small candy-striped bars of red, blue and gold. On the left margin, a vivid green dragon with a long curling tail ending in a red ribbon perches on a small ochre wooden stool, breathing a thin wisp of red flame. In the lower right, a tiny grotesque figure in a vermilion tunic, blue hose and green hood raises its arms toward the vine. Scattered throughout the border are naturalistic details: a woodpecker-like bird, a yellow-breasted songbird, an orange-and-black butterfly and a long-billed white bird near the top. The illumination is flat and luminous, with matte tempera colors and sparkling gold highlights.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the gilded initials that anchor the text, then follow the central vine that frames the page like a growing tree. Let your eye wander through the tiny leaves, birds and butterflies hidden among the tendrils. Pause on the dialogue between the fire-breathing dragon on the left and the small red-clad figure below, where devotion and playful fantasy meet on the same page.
ContextContexto
This folio comes from the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre from 1387 to 1425, a Book of Hours made in Paris around 1405. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the volume was highly prized by its owner, whose coat of arms appears on no fewer than twenty folios, and was likely bought ready-made on the luxury Parisian market during a trip in 1404-05 rather than commissioned directly. It is a collaborative work showing six distinct painting styles attributed to two Italian, two French and two Netherlandish artists. The overall design and seventeen large miniatures are by a Bolognese illuminator known as the Master of the Brussels Initials, while most borders were executed by his assistant, a Florentine who signed himself Zecho da Firenze on folio 208v. The medium is ink, tempera and gold on vellum.

Curious detailDato curioso
This French royal manuscript was largely planned by an Italian émigré artist, the Master of the Brussels Initials from Bologna, and it contains a rare artist signature for the period: Zecho da Firenze signed his name on folio 208v.

If you look closely with a magnifier you will see what excites me: this cream-colored parchment is slightly wrinkled but the black and red ink remains firm and straight. The three illuminated initials fascinate me, that blue Q with its red filigree and the S and B divided in blue and pink with burnished gold that still shines. The tempera is intact and the border surrounding the text is exquisite work of tendrils and ivy leaves in gold, blue and pink.

I spend nights looking at edges, and here the margin is a constellation. Follow with your eyes that dark blue trunk that splits into fine tendrils, like an expanding orbit. On the left border there is a green dragon with a red tail, claws and membranous wings breathing a red flame, perched on a small ochre bench. Below a tiny human figure in a red tunic raises its arms toward that sky-blue vine, as if trying to reach it.

This page is like a secret garden with letters! There is a green dragon with a red tail breathing fire standing on a little bench, as if it were its house! Down below there is a tiny person in a red tunic and green hood raising their hands, it looks like they want to play. If you search carefully you find little colorful birds, one yellow and another white with a long beak, and an orange and black butterfly flying among golden and blue little leaves.
