What you would seeLo que verías

This is a rectangular relief in deep reddish wax on a wooden panel, photographed frontally under even light. At the center sits a winged female figure in a draped gown and mural crown, holding a long trumpet across her lap; a reclining lion rests at her feet facing left, flanked by two overflowing cornucopias laden with fruit. On either side stand two slender female figures on tall pedestals, each resting one hand on a small globe atop a staff and raising the other to hold swags of floral garlands that loop above and beside the central group. Across the top stretches an empty rectangular cartouche with beaded molding and scrolled brackets, crowned by a small crest. The entire surface shows age: fine cracks, chips and losses, especially along the lower edge, revealing the underlying wood painted in dark blue-green with patches of warm ochre and blackened borders. The wax has a matte, slightly waxy texture with crisp detail in drapery folds, feathered wings and clustered fruits and leaves.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the central winged figure and follow the line of her trumpet outward to the two standing women. Notice how the floral festoons link all three figures and frame the blank cartouche above. Look closely at the worn lower edge where exposed wood shows this is a working model rather than a finished bronze.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a model for the lower part of a gilt bronze furniture mount made around 1867 by Louis Auguste Alfred Beurdeley, a French cabinetmaker and bronze maker active 1808 to 1882. The medium is red wax relief on a wood panel painted blue-green, classified under Furniture and woodwork in the Decorative Art and Design department. Such wax models were used to visualize ornamental designs before casting in gilt bronze, a common practice in luxury furniture production. The source provides no further description, so the intended piece of furniture is not documented, but it likely belongs to lavish historicist production in France during the Second Empire period.

Curious detailDato curioso

Wax presentation models like this one were essential working tools in nineteenth-century Parisian workshops, allowing craftsmen to refine every fold and ornament by hand before the costly bronze casting and gilding.

  1. What role might the empty cartouche at the top have played once the mount was cast in bronze?¿Qué comunica la cartela vacía en la parte superior y qué texto imaginarías ahí?
  2. How does knowing this is a perishable wax study, not the final gilt object, affect how you value its imperfections?¿Cómo cambia la percepción de la pieza al saber que no es el bronce final sino su modelo en cera?
  3. Which emblems of victory, knowledge or abundance can you identify and how do they work together?¿Qué símbolos de poder, victoria o abundancia reconoces y cómo dialogan entre sí?

I focus on the material, because everything here is fragile. It is red wax modeled on wood painted in bluish green, and time shows in the worn edges, the cracking and the ochre patches where wax is missing. I love the tiny folds of the drapery, the feathered wings and the clusters of fruit in the cornucopias, all matte and waxy. It was a maquette to envision a gilt bronze before casting, a delicate test that today asks for soft light, stable climate and very patient hands.

I am drawn to the terrestrial globes, small and precise on their staffs, held by the two side figures. To me they speak of a century that wanted to measure and embrace the world, to hold it within reach. The central winged figure with trumpet and mural crown, the reclining lion and the cornucopias overflowing with fruit feel like emblems of fame, strength and abundance. All in red wax, like a three-dimensional sketch for a luxury mount around 1867, when science and industry dreamed big.

It looks like a red wax cake! In the middle there is a winged lady sitting down, with a super long trumpet across her lap and a lion lying at her feet looking to one side. On each side there are two ladies standing on little pedestals, each with a tiny world globe and holding flower garlands that hang like party decorations. On top there is an empty sign with swirly corners and at the bottom you can see bluish green wood where the wax chipped off. I want to count the little fruits and feathers.

If you look at the feet of the central winged figure, what animal is lying there and which way is it facing?

    HintPista

Look at the lower part of the relief, right under the draped tunic and the long trumpet.

  2. #2

How many terrestrial globes do the standing female figures hold and what are they resting on?

    HintPista

Look to the sides of the central scene, each woman has a hand on a sphere.

  3. #3

What color is the wax of the relief and what background color shows through where it is worn?

    HintPista

Notice the dominant tone of the relief and the patches along the lower and side edges.
