What you would seeLo que verías

Five small sculpted figures stand in a row on a smooth, light gray surface, against a background that fades from dark gray at the top to almost white below. They are carved in wood with gilding that is now heavily worn: the gold appears dull and patchy, interrupted by large blackish and dark brown areas where the surface has been lost or darkened. Each figure wears a tall, rectangular crown, almost like a small tower, with incised or relief decoration, and loose robes that fall in soft folds over the shoulders and torso. Four sit cross-legged with the drapery spreading over their legs in curved pleats; their hands form distinct gestures in front of the chest, with raised fingers or hands turned in different positions. Their faces have lowered eyelids, serene and concentrated expressions, though erosion softens the features and makes some gazes look blurred. The figure on the far left is the largest and rests on a rectangular wooden base; the one on the far right is the smallest, is truncated at the lower body, and stands on a plain block. The light is soft and diffuse, creating gentle shadows beneath each piece and emphasizing the rough, aged texture of the wood and remaining gold.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the rhythm of the five crowns and the downward gazes, then move from left to right comparing sizes and states of preservation. Notice how the gilding has worn away unevenly: that loss is not secondary damage, but the visual record of the passage of centuries.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual observation: the figure on the far right preserves only the upper part of the body on a small block, while the others sit cross-legged, so the group also reads as a record of fragmentation and survival over time.

The conservatorLa restauradora

What moves me most is the tired gilding. I see wood with opaque, fragmented gold, interrupted by blackish and dark brown areas where the surface was lost. It is not neglect, it is time. Between 900 and 1100 someone carved and gilded these five figures in Japan, Heian period, and the wear tells centuries of use and silence. I look at the tall crowns and the robes with soft folds, and think about how to consolidate without erasing that rough texture that is now part of their history.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see them like a small constellation aligned on a background that fades from dark gray to almost white. There are five, and they are not identical: one is larger on the left on a rectangular base, another is smaller on the right and truncated below. Each has its own hand gesture, its mudra, as if sending different signals. Dated between 900 and 1100, from Heian Japan, they remind me that observing means comparing positions and brightness, and here the worn gold shifts under the soft light that surrounds them.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

They are five little golden people sitting in a row and they look very calm with their eyes almost closed. Their crowns look like tall little towers and their robes have lots of tiny wrinkles. Some have their little hands together and others with fingers sticking up. The gold is chipped and looks brownish and blackish in places, as if they had been hugged for a very long time. The one on the left is the biggest and the one on the right is the tiniest and does not have complete little legs.
