What you would seeLo que verías
A small white porcelain vessel shaped like a leaf, shown in three-quarter view against a soft gray background fading to black. The intimate, palm-sized bowl has an undulating, lobed rim that follows the outline of a leaf, with a slightly pointed tip extending to the left and a short handle on the right resembling a knobby, truncated stem. The exterior is creamy white with gentle vertical ridges suggesting leaf veins, resting on three tiny feet that barely lift the bowl from the surface. The interior is smooth and concave, decorated with a delicate cobalt blue sprig of tiny flowers and dots painted near the right wall. The entire upper rim is edged with a hand-painted band of deep blue, slightly uneven with subtle bleeds that reveal the brushwork. Soft, centered lighting creates gentle shadows and highlights the glossy glaze, with faint reflections along the rim and occasional ochre speckles in the paste near the base. In the foreground the dish sits centrally, while the empty gray field behind it emphasizes its sculptural silhouette, both ornamental and functional.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the leaf-like outline and the stem-like handle. Then look inside to follow the small blue sprig and the uneven hand-painted rim. Finally notice the exterior ridges and the three tiny feet that give it volume.
ContextContexto
According to source data, this is a Leaf Dish attributed to the Arras Porcelain Factory in France, dated around 1780, made in soft-paste porcelain and held in the Cleveland Museum of Art, The Norweb Collection. No further description is provided. French porcelain factories of the 18th century often made small naturalistic tablewares for serving. The white ground with blue decoration is typical of the period. The individual maker and the precise original use are not documented, though such dishes probably held sauces, sweets, or served as decorative table ornaments.

I focus on the surface of this soft-paste porcelain from Arras, around 1780. Notice the creamy white glaze with those ochre specks at the base, typical of the material. The wavy rim is hand-painted with cobalt blue, and you can see slight irregularities from the brush, tiny overflows that keep the human touch alive. The outer grooves suggest leaf veins and the handle mimics a knobby little stem. I am struck by how the soft light reveals both the shine and the fragility of an intimate piece made for the table.

I see this small leaf dish as if it were a satellite captured against a grey void fading to black. Its lobed silhouette floats centered, lit with soft diffuse light that creates gentle shadows, like a celestial body photographed in a studio. I am drawn to the concave interior with its tiny cobalt blue sprig hanging near the rim, a minimal constellation of little flowers and dots. The three tiny feet lift it just slightly, as if levitating. It is an ornamental and functional object hovering between naturalism and the cosmic.

It looks like a tiny magic leaf that turned into a dish! It has a little point on one side and on the other a small stem to hold it, but it is cut off. Outside it is white with lines that look like leaf veins and inside it has pretty little blue flowers painted near the rim. All around the edge there is a strong blue line painted by hand. It is so small it fits in my palm, and it shines as if it were wet. I imagine they used it for sweets or sauce to share.
