soft-paste porcelain with enamel decoration

What you would seeLo que verías

A round plate fills almost the entire frame, seen from the front and slightly from above, upright against a smooth grey background that is darker at the top and lighter below. A soft shadow falls beneath it, giving its roundness some weight. The porcelain is glossy, creamy white, with an undulating, lobed rim outlined by a very thin dark-red line. The wide border is divided into sections by faint radial ribs and is modelled in low relief as tightly woven basketwork, with tiny diagonal crossings that catch the light unevenly. In the shallow centre, a small bouquet is painted off-centre. Dominating it is a large flower with deep purple petals, a yellow ring and a greenish-blue centre, on a green stem with long leaves. Below it are three smaller pink, many-petalled flowers, one still a bud, among delicate twigs with tiny reddish dots. To the right, isolated, is a sprig with two dark-blue flowers and green leaves. Above, a yellow butterfly with black spots hovers; to the left, a much smaller black-and-white insect appears. The painting is fine and sparse, leaving large areas of white porcelain bare.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the large central flower and follow its stems down to the smaller pink blossoms. Then look at the edges: the basket-weave relief and the tiny insects turn an empty border into a garden scene. Notice how much white is left unpainted; the emptiness is part of the decoration.

ContextContexto

This is a soft-paste porcelain plate with enamel decoration, made by the Chantilly Porcelain Factory in France around 1757–60, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it belongs to The Norweb Collection. The source states that it was originally part of a service owned by Don Filippo Infante, Duke of Parma, who was married to Marie Louise Élisabeth, the eldest daughter of Louis XV. The couple are described as important patrons of Chantilly porcelain. The basket-weave border follows models from Vincennes-Sèvres, which in turn drew on models from Meissen in Germany. No specific painter is named.

Curious detailDato curioso

The border preserves a chain of imitation across Europe: Chantilly copied a basket-weave style from Vincennes-Sèvres, which had itself taken the idea from Meissen in Germany.

Look how much the empty white says. This soft-paste porcelain from Chantilly, around 1757 to 1760, lets the surface breathe and that is why it shines so brightly. I linger on the lobed, wavy rim with its very thin dark red line, and on the broad border with its tight basket-weave relief, those tiny diagonal crosses that catch light unevenly. The enamel painting is sparse and precise: one large purple flower with a yellow ring and bluish green center, three small pink roses below, two little dark blue flowers to the right, and just two insects. Less paint means more care.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This plate feels like an orderly sky. At the center, slightly off axis, the floral bunch forms a constellation: the intense purple flower is the main star, with its yellow ring and bluish green heart, then three small pink roses below like satellites and two isolated dark blue flowers to the right. Above, a yellow butterfly with black spots flutters, and to the left a tiny black and white insect. The border with soft radial ribs and its basket-weave texture recalls orbits, all set against the luminous emptiness of the white porcelain.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This plate looks like it wants to be a basket full of flowers! The edge is wavy like a cloud and has a little red line all around, and the rest looks like a real basket weave but it is shiny porcelain. In the middle there is a giant purple flower with a yellow and blue belly, below three little pink flowers that look like sisters, and to the side two tiny blue ones with green leaves. Up top a yellow butterfly with black dots is flying and on the other side there is a bug so small it almost hides. I would not want to get it dirty!
