Tin-glazed soft-paste porcelain with enamel decoration

What you would seeLo que verías

The piece occupies the centre of a photograph against a dark background, shown frontally and leaning slightly back, as if held by an invisible stand. It is a round white porcelain plate with a broad, wavy rim whose soft lobes give it the outline of a flower or shell. A fine line of deep blue runs along the entire edge, emphasising each curve and catching a subtle highlight. The surface is smooth and glossy, with warm ivory reflections at the centre and along the lower curve of the well, contrasting with the matte grey of the surface below. A soft, dark shadow is cast beneath the plate. Almost all decoration is concentrated in the middle: a small, finely drawn blue coat of arms, executed with dense, delicate strokes. Within an oval shield are three fleurs-de-lis — two above, one below — framed by an ornamental cord and a hanging pendant, crowned at the top and flanked by clustered flags, weapons and trophies rendered as dark silhouettes. The rest of the plate is strikingly empty. That contrast between the broad white expanse, the lone blue border and the miniature heraldic centre gives the object a quiet, ceremonial presence, more emblem than ornament.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the broad white emptiness, then let your eye travel to the small blue emblem at the centre. Next, follow the thin line along the scalloped rim and notice how it gives rhythm to an otherwise restrained object. The contrast between the empty surface and the dense heraldry changes the reading: this is both tableware and a statement of rank.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this plate was made around 1785 by the Chantilly Porcelain Factory in France, in tin-glazed soft-paste porcelain with enamel decoration. It belonged to a dinner service commissioned by Louis Joseph, Duke of Bourbon and Prince of Condé. Its centre bears his coat of arms: three fleurs-de-lis surrounded by a cord holding a pendant of the Order of the Holy Spirit, topped by a prince's crown. For the museum, that decoration affirmed the prince's place among the elite of the French royal court. The piece is now in The Norweb Collection.

La pieza pertenece hoy a The Norweb Collection.

Curious detailDato curioso

Despite its small size in the photograph, the central emblem packs in several layers of identity at once: the shield with fleurs-de-lis, the insignia of an order of chivalry, military trophies at the sides, and a crown — a whole biography of rank meant to be read between courses.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

If you look at this almost empty plate you will understand my fascination. The tin-glazed soft-paste porcelain is very sensitive and here it shines with that warm off-white you see in the center. I pause at the intense blue line along the wavy rim, so fine and continuous. Everything concentrates in the middle: the shield with three fleurs-de-lis, the cord of the Order of the Holy Spirit and the princely crown. It is a delicate balance between fragility and symbol.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

To me it looks like a clear night sky. The dark background of the photograph and the blue ring on the rim feel like a horizon. In the center the coat of arms works like a tiny constellation: three fleurs-de-lis, two on top and one below, inside an oval. Around it, like blurry satellites, are the flags and trophies. Most of the plate is empty, like space, and that contrast makes the emblem shine brighter.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This plate looks boring because it is almost all white and then you see a tiny little drawing in the middle. I got closer and saw three little blue flowers which are fleurs-de-lis, with a tiny crown on top and little flags on the sides. The rim has a blue line that goes around like a wave. I imagine that if you were a prince you would not want your food to cover your shield, so they left it so empty.
