What you would seeLo que verías

The piece is shown from the front, almost upright and resting on its lower edge, at the center of the image against a dark gray background that lightens downward and becomes nearly black at the top. It is a circular white porcelain saucer seen from above, with a wide, flat rim and a deep, round central hollow intended to hold a cup. That empty, luminous hollow gathers a soft reflection inside and marks the exact center of the composition. Two thin, intense blue lines run around the saucer: one encircles the hollow and the other follows the outer perimeter. At the very edge is a slender gilded border with small repeated teeth or dots. Against the smooth white surface of the rim are four painted sprays of flowers, separated by broad empty spaces. At the top, a pink rose and a yellow rose stand out, with small blue flowers, red berries, and green leaves. On the right is a smaller group of pink blossoms; at lower left, a large rose accompanies purple and yellow flowers; at lower right, blue and pink flowers combine with a yellow bloom striped in reddish tones. The surface looks glossy, smooth, and delicate. Soft light casts a short shadow beneath the right side and highlights the glaze without hiding the minute detail of the petals.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the empty hollow in the center and the whiteness around it, then follow the blue circles toward the rim. Notice that the four bouquets are not repeated: their differences become more rewarding the longer you look. The gold edge turns a functional object into a small ceremonial frame.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is a saucer made in 1767 by the Sèvres Porcelain Factory in France, founded in 1756. It is catalogued as ceramic in the Department of Decorative Art and Design at the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it is held in The Norweb Collection. It is made of porcelain. The information provided does not say which service it belonged to, who owned it, or which cup originally accompanied it, although it probably formed part of a drinking set. Its painted floral decoration reflects the refined taste for tableware in eighteenth-century France.

Curious detailDato curioso

A visually surprising observation: none of the four bouquets is identical to another, so the saucer changes subtly as it is turned in the hand.

This 1767 Sèvres saucer makes me pause at its perfect fragility. I see the bright white porcelain, with that luminous central well made to hold a cup that is missing today. I am fascinated by the two intense blue lines that contain everything, and that fine golden border with its tiny repeated dots that must have been painted by hand. The four floral bouquets are spaced with empty white between them, letting the surface breathe. It is a balance between delicacy and absolute technical control.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at it and think of orbits. This saucer is like a small solar system seen from above, centered and symmetrical. In the middle, the deep round well is like a pale sun reflecting light, and around it four constellations of flowers orbit: pink and yellow roses, little blue blossoms, red berries. The two blue lines are like rings that organize space, and the golden rim is the outer limit. Everything floats on a dark gray background, as if the object were suspended in night.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a plate for a tiny princess. In the middle it has a shiny round dip where her little cup would go, but the cup got lost. Around it there are four little bunches of flowers in many colors, as if someone had stuck stickers of pink, yellow and purple roses with little green leaves. It has two thin blue lines and on the very edge tiny golden dots that sparkle. I like that there is a lot of empty white space between the flowers, so they look prettier and not all crowded together.
