What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows a vertical sheet of paper, very pale and aged, presented as the back side of a drawing. The background is a yellowed ivory, almost cream, mottled with soft ochre foxing and tide marks, with uneven, slightly darkened edges that show small tears, creases and old hinge remains at the top. In the middle of the sheet a large, extremely faded graphite sketch can be glimpsed, probably a standing woman holding a child, but its outlines are so light they almost dissolve into the stains; only delicate strokes hint at drapery folds and an elongated silhouette, with a darker smudge and faint handwritten text near the top edge. Lower down, near the bottom center, a second, much smaller sketch is a little clearer: a seated veiled woman with an infant on her lap, rendered in fine, quick, economical lines that suggest volume with minimal shading. In the center of the page a small handwritten number, 19, and in the lower left corner another tiny notation are visible. The lighting is even and flat, emphasizing the fibrous, slightly textured surface of the paper and the fragility of the almost erased marks.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start by taking in the overall tone of the paper and its stains to separate accidental marks from intentional lines. Then focus on the small, clearer sketch at the bottom and use it as a key to decipher the large, ghostly figure above. Notice how just a few lines are enough to convey posture and intimacy.

ContextContexto

This sheet is the verso of an anonymous 16th-century drawing attributed to Germany or the Netherlands, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art where it is held as part of The Norweb Collection. The medium is listed as graphite on paper. The artist’s name and the sitters are not known, though the title identifies the subjects as two mother-and-child studies. The sheet likely served as a workshop practice page for trying out compositions, a common use at the time for religious themes such as the Virgin and Child. As a verso, the main drawing is on the other side, and these faint marks are secondary studies.

Curious detailDato curioso

Graphite began to spread as a drawing tool in Europe during the 16th century after a major deposit was discovered in England, making this an early example of its use for sketching.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does knowing you are looking at the back of the sheet, a secondary space, change how you value what you see?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción de la imagen cuando sabes que lo que ves es el reverso, un espacio secundario y no la obra principal?
  2. What allows you to read such faint, minimal lines as a mother and child?¿Qué te hace reconocer como madre e hijo a unas líneas tan escasas y casi borradas?
  3. What can an unfinished sketch reveal that a finished painting might hide?¿Qué valor tiene para ti un boceto inacabado frente a una pintura terminada?

If you look closely, you notice the paper before the drawing. It is a yellowish ivory, almost cream, with porous fibers and pale ochre stains from humidity. The edges are darkened and have small tears and folds. The graphite strokes are so faint and faded they almost disappear. My job is to barely touch it, just to observe how time left its mark and to protect that fragility so these two sketches do not vanish completely.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

For me this reverse side is like a sky at dawn. The cream background is a pale vault and the ochre stains are scattered nebulae. The graphite figures are very faint stars that are hard to distinguish. The large one standing is a wide and diffuse constellation, the small seated one with a veil is sharper, like a double system. The number 19 in the center is our coordinate to avoid getting lost in this sixteenth-century paper universe.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a magic sheet that was playing hide and seek. There are two drawings of moms with their babies but one is almost invisible, like a ghost, you have to guess where the standing lady is. The other one, lower down, is tiny and clearer, the lady has like a little blanket on her head. The paper is very old, yellowish like toasted bread and it has little spots. It even has a number 19 written on it like a secret name.
