What you would seeLo que verías

A round portrait miniature, presented inside a thick 19th-century gilt metal frame with an engraved inner border and a small hanging loop at the top, photographed against a plain light-grey wall that casts a soft shadow to the right. At the centre sits an older man, three-quarter length, turned slightly toward the viewer with a calm, direct gaze. His powdered white hair is short and curly at the sides; his face is pale and full, with small eyes, a straight nose and closed lips. He wears a very dark, almost black coat over a white waistcoat and high white cravat. Across his chest runs a wide bright-blue sash over a narrower red-and-black one, and on his left breast cluster several large star-shaped orders in silver, red enamel and gold, plus a small white Maltese cross; at his neck hangs a jeweled pendant. In his lowered right hand he delicately holds a tiny oval portrait of another man, while his gloved left hand rests on a leopard-print cushion over pink fabric. Behind him hangs a heavy dark-green curtain; to the left appear pale classical columns and steps. His legs, in dark breeches below, look oddly short and small. At mid-left, barely legible, is the painter's signature.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the shower of orders and sashes on his chest, then at the tiny portrait he holds in his right hand: there the power relationship is told. Notice next his shortened legs at the bottom edge. That disproportion shifts the miniature from official propaganda to the work of an artist still learning.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is Alexander Bezborodko (1747–1799), foreign minister under Catherine the Great and, from Paul I's accession in 1797, grand chancellor of the Russian Empire. In that office he is credited with postal reforms, banking regulation, and road building. He wears the blue sash of the Order of Saint Andrew over the red-and-black sash of Saint Vladimir, stars and badges on his left breast, the Maltese cross, and around his neck the diamond-encrusted Order of Saint Alexander Nevsky; in his hand he holds a miniature of Paul I. Pierre-Charles Cior (1769–1840), trained under the Spanish miniaturist Juan Bauzil, was official miniaturist to the king of Spain and a court painter in Russia; this work probably comes from his extended stay in Saint Petersburg.

Curious detailDato curioso

Surprising visual observation: compared with the torso and head, Bezborodko's legs look too small, as if Cior had run out of room when planning the composition — a possible sign, the source notes, that this is an early-career miniature.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

From my workbench I focus on the thick gilded frame with its hanging ring and how it protects this circular miniature painted on ivory. I notice the pale blue sash crossing the dark coat and the right hand delicately holding a small oval portrait. I am drawn to the cluster of silver and enamel stars on the chest and the leopard-pattern cushion under the gloved hand. I also see that the legs look strangely short and small, a curious matter of proportion that tells us about the miniaturist's hand.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

When I look at this portrait I think of insignia as constellations. On the left side of the chest several silver stars with red and gold centers shine, as if the chancellor were wearing his own sky of honors. The wide pale blue sash and the red and black sash cross his body like celestial bands. He holds a tiny oval portrait in his hand as if holding a small moon. Behind him, the dark green curtain and pale classical columns create a solemn, theatrical backdrop.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This gentleman looks very fancy and a bit serious with his curly white hair and black coat. What I like most is that he has many shiny stars stuck on his chest, like superhero medals, and two colorful sashes crossing his body, one light blue and one red with black. In one hand he holds a tiny picture of another man and with the other he touches an animal-spotted cushion. He is sitting in front of a very large green curtain and some stairs with columns.
