What you would seeLo que verías

An etching in dark brown and black ink on cream-colored paper, framed by a thin borderline and a wide margin with Italian text below. On the right, dominating the scene, stands a large circular ancient temple, seen close up and from a slightly low viewpoint. Fluted columns with worn capitals ring its curved wall, now patched with small rectangular windows, a modest doorway, crumbling stucco, and dark stains. Above it rises a broad, low tiled roof and a small bell tower with an arched opening and a cross. Bright sunlight strikes the right side of the columns, while deep, hatched shadows gather on the left, giving the stone a rough, weathered texture. At its base, everyday life goes on: laundry hangs on lines, large cart wheels lean against the wall, wooden planks, barrels, and logs are piled nearby, and tiny figures walk, talk, or rest on the ground. In the left foreground sits an empty two-wheeled wooden cart; behind it, houses with tiled roofs, shutters, an archway, and a street receding toward a distant hill with towers. Dramatic clouds, built from fine swirling lines, fill most of the sky.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the round temple on the right and notice how its columns and tiled roof shape the whole composition. Then look down: laundry, wheels, carts, and tiny figures turn a monument into a workplace. Finally, follow the street on the left toward the bright distance; the contrast between grandeur and everyday wear changes how the ruin reads.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a 1758 etching and engraving by Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720–1778), an Italian printmaker known for his views of Rome. It belongs to his famous series of Roman vedute. The English museum title identifies the building, with a question mark, as the Temple of Portunus, while the caption engraved in the image calls it the Temple of Cybele in Piazza della Bocca della Verità. That discrepancy reflects older attributions; the temple’s precise identification in this record remains uncertain and should be treated with caution.

Curious detailDato curioso

The caption Piranesi himself engraved names the building the Temple of Cybele, a label different from the hesitant modern museum title — a small, visible trace of how attributions of Roman ruins have changed over time.

I pause on the cream paper and that dark brown and black ink Piranesi used in 1758, still intense in the shadows. Look how the hatched lines create roughness on the aged stone, the flaking stucco and the dark stains. I am interested in the human patchwork: small rectangular windows cut into the curved wall, the little bell gable with a cross on the tiled roof. It is not just a ruin, it is an inhabited building, with laundry hanging and carts at its foot.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This circular temple reminds me of an old observatory, though here it is a temple in the Piazza della Bocca della Verità. I look up: the sky fills almost half the print, full of dramatic clouds drawn with fine wavy lines. Light hits the columns on the right straight on and leaves deep shadows on the left, as if the sun were marking the hours on the stone. The contrast between the vast sky and the tiny figures below makes me think about our scale against time.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant round house made of many columns like sticks. It has a little door and tiny little windows up top! On the roof there is a little thing with a cross, like a tiny hat. Down below there is a fun mess: hanging laundry, huge wheels, barrels and logs. I see a two-wheeled cart with no horses and tiny people chatting. I like that the temple is old and stained but people still play and live there.
