Album of ten leaves, ink and color on paper
What you would seeLo que verías
The photograph shows a closed album standing upright against a plain, off-white background, viewed slightly from the left and at a near-frontal angle. The front cover dominates the image: a large rectangle of very dark brown wood, polished and subtly lustrous, with a fine vertical grain, soft mottling, and beveled edges that catch a faint highlight. Down the upper right portion run four large Chinese characters in raised gold, arranged in a single vertical column. Their strokes are clear and elegant against the darkness. Behind and to the left of the cover, the album's leaves fan out slightly: multiple thin, wavy layers in muted tan, dusty rose, and pale brown, suggesting aged paper or silk mounts seen edge-on. The top shows the same compressed strata. Soft, even lighting casts a faint shadow beneath and behind the object, giving it weight and a modest, sculptural presence. Nothing else appears in the frame; there are no people, plants, birds, or visible interiors. The scale is unclear without a reference, though the proportions suggest a handheld desk object rather than a large book. Small signs of wear, slight tonal shifts in the wood, and the uneven page edges reward slow looking.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First look at the contrast between the pale background and the almost black cover, which makes the album loom like a small piece of furniture. Then follow the gold characters downward and shift your attention to the layered edges of the leaves on the left. That second look changes everything: this is not a single painting, but a container whose contents remain hidden.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this is *Desk Album: Flower and Bird Paintings* by Zhang Ruoai (Chinese, 1713–1746), dated to the 1700s, during the Qing dynasty (1644–1911). It consists of ten leaves in ink and color on paper and belongs to the Department of Chinese Art at the Cleveland Museum of Art, which credits it as an anonymous gift. Painting albums were made for close, intimate viewing, leaf by leaf. The exact year of this example is unknown, and because the photograph shows it closed, the flower-and-bird images inside cannot be described from this view.

Curious detailDato curioso
Surprising visual observation: all ten paintings mentioned in the title are completely invisible here; the only hints that this is a painting album are the stacked page edges and the gilt inscription on the cover.

I linger on the cover, that wood so dark brown it almost looks black but is not. I see the fine vertical grain, the quiet shine of the varnish and the beveled edges catching the light. The four golden characters on the upper right have a slight relief and an elegant brushstroke, as if floating. To the left you can sense the secret: thin layers of paper in ochre and dusty pink peeking through the slightly open side. Nothing inside is revealed here, and that reserved quality is part of its intimate charm.

This closed album reminds me of a night sky. The cover is like a dark vault, of polished deep brown wood, and the four golden characters at the top right are constellations aligned vertically. We do not see the interior paintings, just as we do not see stars by day, yet we know they are there, tucked inside. The slightly open pages on the left look like layers of soft light, in ochre and pinkish tones. It is an object to look at up close, calmly, holding it in your hands, like an intimate telescope holding its own universe.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a mysterious little box made of dark shiny wood. At the top right it has four little golden letters that shine like fancy stickers, placed one under the other. On one side many thin little pages peek out, kind of wavy, in peach, light brown and pale pink colors. You cannot see any bird or flower because it is all closed, and that makes me curious. I imagine it feels a bit heavy, to open slowly on a table and discover page by page what it hides inside.

I am closed and show no flowers or birds, but on one side I let you see my layers in pink and ochre tones. What am I?
HintPista
Look at the left side of the photo, where the cover lets wavy papers peek through.

We are four and shine in gold, aligned vertically on the dark wood. What are we?
HintPista
Look at the upper right corner of the cover.

I am the smooth light background where the album rests and I lend it my soft shadow. What color am I?
HintPista
It is not the dark wood or the gold, it is the even tone surrounding the whole object.
