A vertical greyish-brown sandstone sculpture is photographed against a plain grey background that emphasizes its shadow on the left. It fills almost the full height of the image and tapers toward the bottom, like a piece made to be set against a wall. In the foreground stands a tall woman with a curving body and her hip thrust strongly to her left, head tilted, eyes half-lowered, and a serene expression. Her torso is bare; she wears long necklaces falling between her breasts, armlets, a tall headdress, and a close-fitting skirt with beaded belts and hanging strands that create rhythms across her thighs and legs. The smooth surface of her skin contrasts with the small, crisp jewelry, carved in dense detail. Behind her right shoulder and arm curl the branches, leaves, and round fruits of the tree with which she is merged, most visible at the upper left. Below, on a smaller scale, an equally bejeweled attendant looks up; one of the larger figure's hands rests near her head. Soft light models the rounded volumes, reveals the grain, small erosions, and worn edges, and shows the difference between the polished stone of the bodies and the tight relief of ornaments and foliage.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the sway of the main figure's hip and then follow the long necklaces down through the beaded girdles. Next, look for the tree curling behind her shoulder and the fruits at the upper left. Finally, drop to the small attendant: her scale and upward gaze return your eye to the deity's lowered head.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this sandstone sculpture, dated to about 973, comes from Harshagiri, Sikar, in Rajasthan, northwestern India, and belongs to 10th-century medieval Hindu temple art. It represents a female tree deity with an attendant who gazes into a mirror. Such idealized women continue earlier traditions of nature divinities seen on ancient Buddhist sites and, on Hindu temples, conveyed auspicious abundance, fecundity, and prosperity. The source highlights period traits: the exaggerated thrust of the hip, dense and crisply carved jewelry set against smooth planes of flesh, and facial features drawn with linear clarity. The specific temple setting it originally occupied is not stated.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail is the scale contrast: the attendant reaches barely to the deity's waist, yet she is carved with the same elaborate jewelry, headdress, and care given to the much larger figure.

I focus on the stone and how it has aged. It is brownish gray sandstone, with visible grain and worn edges from time, yet it still keeps a beautiful contrast between the polished skin and the tiny, densely carved jewelry. You can see soft erosion on the rounded volumes and the fine work of necklaces, bracelets and belts. It comes from Harshagiri, in Rajasthan, and dates to around 973, so I imagine its long history exposed on a temple. What moves me most is that it remains standing, elegant, still carrying the leaves and fruits of the tree that embraces it.

I like to think of this figure as someone who observes the world calmly. She has half-closed eyes, a tilted head and a strongly projecting hip that gives her balance, as if she has found her own center of gravity. She is fused with her mango tree, with branches and fruits surrounding her, a reminder that everything is connected, like constellations. Below, her smaller companion looks up, perhaps holding a mirror. To me it is a lesson in orientation: to bloom where you are, attentive to your surroundings, and to reflect the abundance around you.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

She looks like a fairy-tale princess attached to her tree! She wears long necklaces, shiny bracelets and a little skirt with belts that make patterns on her legs. Her hip sticks out to one side, as if she were dancing. Behind her sprout little branches with leaves and round fruits. Down below there is a tiny friend looking up at her and almost touching her head. I imagine they are forest friends and the tree is their home. I like her because she looks soft, happy and very elegant, as if she were about to wave at me.

Look at the upper left, behind the woman's shoulder: what tree embraces her with its leaves and round fruits?

    HintPista

Its fruits are round and its branches curl around her.
