What you would seeLo que verías

A vertical, rectangular bronze plaquette with slightly rounded top corners and a molded base, photographed against a light gray background. The dark brown, almost black metal has warm reflections on the raised areas and a smooth, polished sheen on the central body. At the center stands a nude young man with a muscular, slender body, curly hair, and a serene profile turned to his left. He stands in contrapposto, his right arm raised holding a staff or branch with laurel leaves, his left arm lowered holding a curved object from which foliage spills. He is not alone: around him, compressed with almost no empty space, is a dense accumulation of musical instruments and symbols. On the left one can make out a tree, a lyre, panpipes, a turtle, a small lute or guitar, a trumpet, and other hard-to-identify tools. On the right rise acanthus-like leaves, a long curved trumpet, and at the bottom a small altar or box with flames. At the top center there is a clean circular hole for hanging. The relief is low but clear, with fine incised details in the hair, the turtle's shell, the leaves, and the muscles. The overall impression is of a solemn emblem, dark and crowded, made to be looked at slowly.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the young man's calm, almost indifferent face amid the visual clutter, and then let your eye wander outward to identify each instrument. Notice next the small hole at the top and the turtle near his leg: those two details change the piece from a portrait into an object made to be hung and decoded, not simply admired.

ContextContexto

According to information from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this work is titled Allegory of Music, was made by an unknown artist around 1500, and is associated with northern Italy in the 16th century. It is a bronze sculpture, a gift of Mrs. Chester D. Tripp. It belongs to the type of small Renaissance relief plaquettes, objects meant to be contemplated up close, collected, and sometimes hung. The nude youth, the laurel, the lyre, and the profusion of instruments point to a learned allegory of music, very likely linked to Apollo, god associated with music and poetry. The maker's identity and the exact original setting are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

The turtle beside the figure's leg is not just decoration: in Greek myth, Hermes created the first lyre using a tortoise shell as its sound box, so the animal also functions here as a visual clue to the origin of stringed instruments.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What does music mean here: a pleasurable art, a form of knowledge, or a divine power?¿Qué significa aquí la música: un arte placentero, una forma de conocimiento o un poder divino?
  2. Why choose a nude young body to represent something as abstract as music?¿Por qué representar algo tan abstracto como la música con un cuerpo joven y desnudo?
  3. How does the experience of the piece change when you imagine it hanging, small and within reach, rather than isolated in a museum?¿Cómo cambia la experiencia de la pieza si la imaginas colgada, pequeña y al alcance de la mano, y no aislada en un museo?

If you get close you will see this bronze is very dark, almost black, with warm highlights where the relief is highest. That is patina and wear from time and from hands that have touched it. I notice the clean hole at the top, made to hang it and look at it up close. The work is fine, with small incised lines in the curly hair, in the laurel leaves and on the turtle shell. Everything is crowded, with no empty background, like a small treasure to collect.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I like to think of this plaquette as a constellation. At the center the nude youth shines like a main star, in a serene contrapposto, and around him his attributes orbit like planets: the lyre on one side, the pan flute on the other, trumpets, a small lute, the tree and the turtle. There is even an altar with flames below, like a small sun. Everything revolves around the idea of music and harmony, just as Apollo orders the cosmos with his lyre.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

There is a young man with no clothes in the middle and he is surrounded by so many things, it looks like nothing else can fit. I see a little turtle below, a flute with many little tubes, a lyre and long trumpets. He has curly hair and holds a little branch with leaves. Below there is like a little box with fire. At the top there is a small round hole to hang it on the wall. Everything is dark brown and shiny, it looks like a magic music charm.
