Gum tempera on paper
What you would seeLo que verías
This is a vertical painting on paper, surrounded by a wide orange-red border worn at the corners and edged with fine white lines. Inside it, a dark rectangle fills almost the entire field. Its surface is covered by a web of wavy, concentric shapes drawn in thin, pale lines over a nearly black brown ground, like eddies of water seen from above. At the center rises a slender, straight stem in pale ochre, cut off at the bottom. From its top, three curved stalks branch out to support three large banyan leaves in soft green, with faint veins and sharply pointed tips. The upper leaf, tilting to the right, holds a blue-gray baby, naked except for small ornaments, lying on his side and drawing one foot toward his mouth. On the smaller leaf at left stands a tiny light-skinned figure in a turban and white clothing, his body turned toward the infant. The third leaf, on the right, is empty. There is no horizon and almost no shadow: the small, luminous figures seem to float over an immense, dark sea.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the dark, rippling field and let it feel endless before looking for the figures. Then follow the slender stem up to the leaves and find the two tiny bodies. Notice that the empty leaf on the right helps balance the scene and makes the blue infant seem even more fragile and important.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this anonymous painting, made around 1680 in gum tempera on paper, comes from the Pahari kingdom of Basohli in northern India, in the foothills of the Himalayas. It depicts the sage Markandeya, granted immortality, wandering alone through the cosmic ocean after the world has dissolved. There he finds a banyan branch and, on one leaf, the infant Krishna sucking his toe; looking into the child's mouth, Markandeya sees the entire universe, past and future. The image sets destruction against rebirth: the end of one cycle is also the infancy of the next. The court artist who painted it is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual detail: only one of the three large leaves carries the divine infant, another carries the sage, and the third is left completely empty, as if waiting for the world that has yet to be created again.

I pause to consider how this gum tempera on paper from Basohli, around 1680, still holds its light after so long. The orange-red border is worn at the corners, with fine white lines still framing the void. The dark ocean was built with thin layers of almost black brown and swirls of pale concentric lines, patiently drawn. The ochre stem and three green banyan leaves keep their subtle veins. And there, tiny and luminous, the grayish blue of Krishna stands out against immensity, without shadows, as if floating.

To me this is not a sea but space after the end of the world. That almost black brown background full of concentric ripples looks like an expansion seen from far above, a cosmic ocean with no horizon left. At the center, a straight stem holds three banyan leaves like tiny islands. On one, the blue infant Krishna brings his foot to his mouth and holds inside him the entire universe, past and future. Markandeya, tiny with a white turban, watches from another leaf. The immense fits inside the small and begins again.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
The baby is blue and lying on a floating leaf! He is sucking his toe like it is a pacifier. There are three big green leaves growing from an ochre little stick and all around is dark water with lots of swirls. On another tiny leaf there is a very small man with a turban staring at the baby in surprise. One leaf is empty, as if waiting for him. There is no floor or sky, just them floating. I like to think the baby is so powerful he keeps the whole world inside his tummy.

If you count carefully, how many green banyan leaves do the stems hold at the center?
HintPista
Look at the ochre stem in the center: three curves branch from the top, each ends in a leaf, but only two are occupied.

What is the blue-skinned baby on the upper leaf doing?
HintPista
He is lying on his side, nude with little jewels, in a pose like a curious baby exploring his own body.
