What you would seeLo que verías

At the center of the image, against a smooth gray background that darkens toward the top, sits a wide, hemispherical bowl photographed from the front at rim height. Its mouth is broad and open, wider than its small, slightly flattened base, and its curved wall rises without a foot. On opposite sides, just below the rim, two small lug handles protrude discreetly, one visible at the left and the other, paler, at the right. The ceramic surface is matte, earthy, and worn: a reddish-orange ground with areas of brown, ochre, and cream where the paint and clay have abraded over time. Bold black bands sweep diagonally and in concentric arcs across the exterior, forming oval and semicircular motifs divided by short crossbars, like ladders or combs. Smaller reddish rectangles punctuate the black bands. Inside, also painted in red-orange with dark vertical markings, the decoration continues beyond the rim. The studio light falls softly from above, modeling the volume, revealing fine scratches, speckles, small chips, and granular texture, and casting a diffused shadow beneath the bowl onto the seamless gray surface. The overall scale feels intimate and hand-held, though no human figure or size reference appears.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the bold black bands and notice how they curve with the bowl's round body, turning simple arcs into a design that wraps the whole vessel. Then look inside the rim: the decoration continues where only someone eating or drinking would see it. Finally, come closer to the worn patches and small handles, which shift the piece from an abstract pattern to an object that was held and used.

ContextContexto

According to the source records, this two-handled bowl was made between 1000 and 1500 by an unknown maker in the Santamarian culture of Argentina. It is earthenware and now belongs to the Art of the Americas collection at the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a gift of Katherine C. White. Santamarian ceramics are associated with northwestern Argentina and are recognized for painted pottery in red, black, and lighter earth tones with strong geometric motifs. Its exact place of origin, original owner, and specific use are not known; it was probably a functional vessel, but its archaeological context is not documented in the available information.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail: although the title emphasizes its two handles, they barely project beyond the rim — they are small lugs on opposite sides, easy to miss until you look at the bowl's silhouette.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the geometric design change as it follows the curve of the bowl, and what happens when the vessel is turned in the hands?¿Cómo cambia el diseño geométrico al seguir la curva del cuenco, y qué ocurre cuando la vasija se gira entre las manos?
  2. What might it have meant to decorate the inside as carefully as the outside, in a surface not everyone could see?¿Qué pudo significar decorar el interior con el mismo cuidado que el exterior, en una superficie que no todas las personas verían?
  3. What do the wear, scratches, and losses of paint tell us about the object's age and use that the pattern alone does not?¿Qué nos cuentan el desgaste, las rayaduras y las pérdidas de pintura sobre la antigüedad y el uso del objeto que el motivo por sí solo no dice?

I pause at what time has left visible. This fired clay bowl, made between 1000 and 1500 in northwest Argentina, still keeps its orange-red and black paint quite eroded. I see black bands with concentric arcs and short crossbars, small reddish rectangles and a matte, grainy surface with fine scratches and tiny chips. The two small lug handles just below the rim are worn. It is not just decoration, it is real wear that tells of centuries of use and a history without a known archaeological context.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

When I look at this Santamaria bowl I think of orbits. It is hemispherical, wide-mouthed and stable, like a small portable horizon made between 1000 and 1500. The black bands form concentric arcs and ovals that remind me of hand-drawn trajectories and eclipses, with those crossbars that look like tally marks. The red-painted interior and the earthy-toned exterior make me imagine an inverted night sky, a functional vessel that could also have been used to measure, share and observe the world.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a basin for giants but small and with little ears. It has two handles on the sides, one on the left and one on the right, right under the rim. It is reddish orange with thick black stripes that make curves like rainbows and little ladders. It is also painted inside. It looks rough and very old, as if it had been used a lot many many years ago in Argentina. I imagine they kept fruit or water in it and carried it by holding its little ears.

How many small handles can be seen on the sides of the bowl, just below the rim?

    HintPista

Look to the left and right of the rim, they are like small discreet ears.

  2. #2

What two main colors form the thick geometric bands over the reddish orange background?

    HintPista

One is very dark and makes arcs and little ladders, the other appears in small rectangles.

  3. #3

What is the overall shape of this vessel: is it tall and closed or wide, open and hemispherical?

    HintPista

Its mouth is much wider than its base and it looks like half a sphere without a foot.
