What you would seeLo que verías
A horizontal black-and-white etching depicting a calm river landscape. In the foreground, water fills almost the lower half of the composition, rendered with soft horizontal strokes and elongated vertical reflections that mirror the sails. At center-right, a two-masted barge with dark, heavily cross-hatched sails dominates; its shading is dense and velvety, and its reflection is nearly as dark as the sails themselves. Around it are smaller boats and a shoreline suggested by quick scribbles indicating rocks and reeds. Across the river in the middle ground, a distant bank lined with leafy trees drawn with nervous, dotted strokes extends horizontally, interspersed with two- and three-story brick houses with faintly suggested windows. To the left, a tall narrow building with chimneys marks the urban edge. The sky is largely empty, with only a few wavy lines hinting at clouds. Light is diffuse, without strong shadows, and the paper texture appears granular with slight age spots. In the lower left corner the artist’s stylized butterfly monogram is visible, and tiny rowing boats with barely discernible figures float near the shore.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the dark sails on the right, the densest and most contrasted area, and follow their quivering reflection in the water. Then travel left along the opposite bank to find the houses, trees and tiny boats. Notice how the emptiness of the sky balances the intricate hatching of the sails and foliage.
ContextContexto
Source data identifies this work as Hurlingham by James McNeill Whistler, an American artist (1834-1903), dated 1879, executed as an etching and held in the Prints department of the Cleveland Museum of Art as a Gift of Mrs. Charles F. Devine. No further description is provided in the source. Whistler was active in London and his graphic work of the late 1870s focused on views of the Thames, so the title likely refers to the Hurlingham area on the river. The sketchy, atmospheric linear style is typical of his later etching period. No additional specific details about this impression are known from the given data.

Whistler signed his etchings and paintings with a distinctive butterfly monogram, visible here at the lower left, which he developed from his initials and refined throughout his career.

I pause on the paper and its grainy surface, lightly spotted by age. This 1879 etching is almost all line: soft horizontal strokes for the water and thick cross-hatching for the dark sails. I love how Whistler leaves the sky nearly empty, with just a few wavy lines, so the composition can breathe. In the lower left corner I look for his stylized butterfly, his monogram. It is a work of atmosphere, not detail, where the dark reflection holds the balance.

There are no stars here, but there are long vertical reflections that duplicate the sails on the river. They remind me how calm water acts as an imperfect mirror. The two-masted barge dominates the center-right and its liquid shadow is almost as dense as itself. I think of the diffuse light, with no hard shadows, of a cloudy dusk over the Thames. Even the small canoes leave a faint trace. It is an empty sky that invites you to look down, at the double of the world.

It looks like the river is a giant mirror. The big barge has two very black sails, as if they were drawn with lots of scribbles. Its reflection in the water is just as dark and I like to count the other tiny boats around it. On the bank there are trees made with little dots and houses with tiny windows. The sky has almost nothing, just a few streaky clouds. If you look carefully at the bottom left there is a little hidden butterfly, it is the artist's signature.
