What you would seeLo que verías
The image is the engraved title page of the series, centered on a creamy, soft-textured paper with slightly irregular edges and faint age toning. Three concentric rectangular borders drawn in fine black ink frame the central text, the innermost defining the title area. At the top there is an inscription in Hebrew characters, followed by an English legend in ornate Gothic lettering: «ILLUSTRATIONS of The BOOK of JOB», where letters vary in size and weight, with pointed terminals and delicate hatching that suggests relief. The title dominates the center through scale and contrast. Below, in smaller type, it reads «Invented & Engraved by William Blake 1825». At the bottom of the design, five winged figures — angels or cherubs with serene faces and wavy hair — emerge among the lower letters, with long wings and feathers rendered in fine lines; their bodies intertwine to form a curved garland that visually supports the text. Outside the main frame, near the bottom of the sheet, a small cursive inscription gives publication details in London. The composition is symmetrical, luminous and linear, dominated by the white of the paper and the black linework, with no color beyond ink and paper.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the hierarchy of lettering, from the Hebrew to the Gothic title, and notice how scale leads the eye to «JOB». Then linger on the five angels at the base: their wings and gazes soften the rigidity of the text and turn the title page into a celestial scene.
ContextContexto
This print is the title page for the series Illustrations of the Book of Job, engraved by William Blake (1757–1827), British Romantic artist and poet. According to source data, the work is dated 1825 and is housed in the Prints department of the Cleveland Museum of Art. Blake created 22 engravings inspired by the Old Testament Book of Job, a central text in the Judeo-Christian tradition concerning suffering, faith and divine justice. The series was commissioned by his patron John Linnell and published in London in 1826, and is regarded as one of Blake’s most accomplished graphic works. The elaborate lettering, Hebrew inscription and angelic figures reflect his interest in the visionary and spiritual. No further details about this particular impression are given.

Curious detailDato curioso
Blake taught himself engraving and for this series he reshaped his linear style after studying prints by Albrecht Dürer lent to him by Linnell, achieving a finer, more controlled line than in his earlier illuminated books.

I pause on the cream-colored paper with irregular edges and those soft, time-worn spots that reveal its age since 1825. I notice the triple linear border in black ink framing the title and the gothic lettering with delicate shading that creates relief without color. Below, the five winged figures intertwine their feathered wings made of very fine lines; there William Blake’s handling shows his mastery of engraving and also how fragile the print is when exposed to light and humidity.

When I see the Hebrew inscription at the top and the large English title, I think about how Blake looked to the heavens for meaning, just like someone studying constellations. This print is the title page for his 22 illustrations of the Book of Job, that ancient story about suffering and faith. The five winged beings at the bottom seem to float like a constellation holding up the words. To me, the bright white of the paper is infinite space where the visionary and spiritual can appear.

I love counting things on this title page! At the top there are strange Hebrew letters I do not understand but they look magical. In the middle it says in big fancy letters «ILLUSTRATIONS of The BOOK of JOB» and below it says who made it, William Blake in 1825. The funniest part is the five little angels with big wings and curly hair hugging each other like a garland. It looks like they are holding up the letters so they do not fall. Everything is surrounded by three black squares one inside the other.
