lithograph
What you would seeLo que verías
Horizontal print in black and white, with very soft gray and sepia tones on cream paper, framed by a thin line. In the center, on a rocky height, rises a vast monastery-palace with rows of uniform windows, a sloping roof, two ornate towers and a large central dome crowned by lanterns and crosses. Below it, a small village of dark-roofed houses nestles among trees. To the left flows a wide, calm river, with luminous reflections and a tiny boat with figures in the distance; the far bank is drawn with wooded hills that fade toward the horizon. To the right, a dirt road curves from the foreground toward the village, cut into a grassy, rocky slope drawn with dense hatching. On the road, a carriage pulled by two horses advances, carrying several passengers. Closer to the viewer, two wayfarers with hats, bundles and a walking stick have stopped: one sits on a wooden railing, the other stands and looks toward the abbey. Vegetation is rendered with fine stippling and lines; the sky, vast and almost empty, has a few soft clouds. Beneath the image, printed text reads “NIEDER OESTERREICH” and, in calligraphic script, “Benedictinerstift Melk.”
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the walkers and the carriage in the foreground, following the road as it curves toward the village. Then let your gaze climb to the abbey: the contrast between the everyday scale of the road and the monumental scale of the building changes the reading of the whole landscape. Finally, look to the left, where the river and the distant hills open up the space.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this lithograph by the Austrian artist Jakob Alt (1789–1872), dated 1819 and titled Nieder-oesterreich, Benedictinerstift Melk, is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a gift of William H. Schab. It shows Melk Abbey, a Benedictine abbey in Lower Austria, elevated above the Danube. The imposing Baroque building visible today was largely rebuilt in the early 18th century. In 1819, lithography was still a relatively new printmaking technique, well suited to widely circulating landscape views like this one. It is not known from the source data whether the print belonged to a larger series.

Curious detailDato curioso
Lithography was invented in 1796, just twenty-three years before this print; in 1819 it was still a novel technique for reproducing landscapes. In the lower right corner the artist’s own hand can be read: “J. Alt 1819.”

I first look at the creamy paper that frames the whole scene with a thin border line. The print is in black and white with grays and a very soft sepia, and you can see how the ink sits differently on the calm river and on the densely shaded rocky slope. I admire the care taken to render the rows of uniform windows of the abbey, its two ornate towers and the large central dome with crosses, and how the contrast is preserved between the bright monastery on the rocky height and the little village with dark roofs nestled among trees below.

What pulls me in most is that broad, almost empty sky that fills the upper half of the print, with just a few soft clouds above the wooded hills on the horizon. That openness makes the silhouette of the two ornate towers and the large central dome with lanterns and crosses stand out as if reaching upward. I love how the light on the river seems to mirror the sky and how from that rocky height you would have an open view over the Danube, perfect for watching the daylight shift, the mist over the water and the changing light toward evening.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
This abbey looks like a castle on top of a rocky hill! I like its many little windows all the same, its two towers and the big dome with tiny crosses on top. Down below there is a small village with dark roofs among trees and a wide river where a super tiny boat floats. On the dirt road a carriage with two horses is coming, and closer to us there are two travelers with hats, bundles and a walking stick, one sitting on a little wooden railing and the other looking at the monastery.
