What you would seeLo que verías

This small, vertical drawing shows a narrow street seen from its entrance, with tall buildings crowding both sides and leaving only a pale strip of sky at the upper center. In the left foreground, three figures walk away from the viewer: a man in a dark hat, blue-green jacket, and black trousers; a woman in a very dark blue, floor-length dress; and another woman in a blue top and long white skirt. Their faces are hidden and they cast almost no shadow, making them feel like anonymous passersby rather than individual portraits. The street, rendered in cream and blue-gray, recedes toward a dark carriage and other tiny figures at its center. On the left rise pale facades with tall, narrow windows, topped by a dark tower with small pinnacles. The buildings on the right feel bulkier, with pronounced cornices, arches at street level, and a small reddish structure at the far edge. Church spires and rooftops are silhouetted in the distance. The black chalk lines are loose, restless, and sometimes retraced, while transparent watercolor washes of blue, gray, pink, and ocher let the cream wove paper show through. The light is diffuse, with no strong sunlight. Along the bottom, written in ink, are the words “C. Pissarro / Rue Damiette – Rouen,” almost blending into the pavement.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the street from the three figures in the foreground toward the carriage and the spires in the distance. Then compare the pale, loosely sketched facades on the left with the heavier, shadowed buildings on the right. Notice how the handwritten title at the bottom becomes part of the pavement, anchoring the scene to a specific place.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) made *Rue Damiette, Rouen* around 1884, in black chalk and watercolor on wove paper, during one of the first of many trips he took to Rouen, a port city in northern France. The source notes that the drawing inspired a virtually identical etching from around the same time and probably served as a preparatory study for it, although that last point is not stated with complete certainty. Pissarro was a founding member of the Impressionist group and devoted much of his career to rural scenes and outdoor landscapes, paying close attention to the effects of weather and natural light. Here that interest shifts to a quiet urban side street, where the gray sky echoes the muted tones of the stone buildings.

I focus on how this small vertical drawing is made. It is black charcoal and watercolor on wove paper, and you can see how Pissarro let the cream paper breathe beneath transparent washes of blue, gray, pink and ochre. The linework is loose and vibrant, sometimes repeated to suggest cornices, narrow windows and arches. At the bottom, the ink signature reads «C. Pissarro / Rue Damiette – Rouen» and seems to blend into the pavement in creamy and bluish gray tones.

What strikes me most is that pale strip of sky at the top center, squeezed between tall buildings on both sides. There is no strong sunlight, the light is diffuse and overcast, typical of Rouen, and that mutes the stone colors into soft grays, creams and blues. Shadows are minimal, almost absent, so the three figures seen from behind in the foreground cast very little. In the distance, church spires and rooftops stand out against that gray sky that calmly covers everything.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It feels like we are walking behind three people down a very narrow street. We cannot see their faces, just a man with a dark hat and two ladies in long skirts, one in very dark blue and another in a blue blouse and white skirt. The street gets tiny until it reaches a dark carriage and little dots that are more people. On the left there is a dark tower with little peaks and on the right a small reddish building. Everything is drawn with black scribbles and soft colors as if it were a cloudy day.

  1. #1

In the foreground, seen from behind, how many figures walk together on the creamy pavement?

    HintPista

Look at the lower left area, they wear a hat and long skirts and their faces are not visible.

  2. #2

At the end of the street, in the center of the perspective, what dark vehicle can be made out among the tiny figures?

    HintPista

It is an old-fashioned form of transport from 19th century daily life moving along the narrow street.

  3. #3

On the left side of the street, what dark vertical element with small pinnacles crowns the light facades?

    HintPista

Look for it at the upper left, above the tall narrow windows.
