What you would seeLo que verías

A small gold coin fills the center of the frame, photographed from above against flat, matte light-gray paper with a fine grain. The coin is roughly circular but not perfect: its rim is uneven, slightly thinned in places, and throws a soft dark shadow toward the lower right, giving it a slight sense of lift from the surface. Its color ranges from deep antique gold in the recesses to pale, almost yellow-white highlights on the raised relief. At center, an emperor faces directly forward. He has wide, symmetrical eyes, heavy brows, a straight nose, a mustache, and a short textured beard. Long wavy hair falls to his shoulders on both sides. He wears a crown rendered with beaded bands and a small ornament at the top. His torso is covered by a richly patterned ceremonial garment, with dotted borders, vertical bands, and small geometric motifs. Across his chest runs a long spear diagonally from lower center to upper right, its pointed tip near the rim; one hand grips its shaft. Raised letters curve around the edge, partly worn, following the coin's circumference. The metal surface shows tiny bumps, hammering marks, and soft wear that catch the light unevenly.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the frontal gaze, designed to meet whoever held the coin. Then follow the spear diagonally across the chest and notice how much regalia fits into such a tiny field. Finally, look at the uneven rim and hammered surface: this was authority made to circulate from hand to hand.

ContextContexto

This is the obverse of a gold solidus struck in Constantinople between 698 and 705, during the reign of Tiberius III Apsimarus. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the solidus was the basic Byzantine gold coin, of 24 karats, and coin production was controlled and supervised by the emperor. Dies were engraved by skilled artists so that the ruler's image would convey authority and stature. Because they combine portraits and inscriptions, Byzantine coins also serve as historical documents. The gift credit is to William Mathewson Milliken, in memory of his father, Thomas Kennedy Milliken. The exact place where this specimen circulated is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

The solidus remained the standard Byzantine gold coin at 24 karats, a purity that helped it function as trusted money across the empire.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on the surface of this ancient gold, between dark golden tones and pale, almost whitish highlights. The relief feels alive with tiny bumps and striking marks, and the irregular edge casts a soft shadow on the gray paper. I notice the gentle wear on the peripheral letters and on the ceremonial robe with dotted borders. As a conservator, I would not polish the shine away: I respect that patina that carries centuries from Constantinople to today.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this coin as a tiny golden sun resting on a pale gray sky. Its edge is not perfectly circular and its light shifts from dark gold in the hollows to whitish yellow on the high points. At the center, the emperor looks straight ahead like a constellation: long wavy hair, a beaded crown and a short beard. The spear crossing his chest diagonally looks like a planet's axis. The letters around it feel like an orbit of words worn by time.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a shiny gold cookie but very old and tiny! The man in the middle looks at me with big eyes, he has a beard and long prince-like hair and a crown with little beads. He wears fancy clothes with tiny dots and stripes and holds a long spear across his chest. The letters around him are a bit blurry and the edge is not perfectly round. It sits on gray paper and makes a little shadow, as if it were floating.
