What you would seeLo que verías

This is a small, horizontal black-and-white engraving on warm, cream-colored paper, built from thousands of fine hatched and cross-hatched lines. Across the top runs a Latin inscription in a narrow band. In the foreground, three men dominate the left and center. An elderly bearded father, wearing a soft pointed cap, fur-trimmed cloak, belt pouch, and loose stockings, leans forward and places coins or a small handful into the outstretched hand of his younger son. That son, bearded and dressed in puffed, slashed sleeves, a short skirted garment, laced boots, and a long sword he holds awkwardly behind him, leans in eagerly with one knee bent. Far left, by an arched stone doorway, another young man leans against the wall, head resting on his hand, sword at his hip, watching with apparent sadness or disapproval. Behind them rises a crenellated brick castle with tiny windows. To the right the scene opens into trees with dense, stippled foliage, a thick-trunked tree near the center, rolling hills, distant mountains, a village, and, at the lower right, two small travelers with pack and staff walking away. Small plants, stones, and twigs ground the figures throughout.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the joined hands at the center, where the whole story begins. Then move left to the young man leaning against the doorway, and right toward the open landscape and the tiny travelers. Notice how the castle stands still behind the father while the son's sword, leg, and body already point away from home.

ContextContexto

This print, The Prodigal Son: Departure of the Prodigal Son, was made around 1540 by Hans Sebald Beham (1500–1550), one of the German 'Little Masters' known for small, highly detailed engravings. It belongs to the Prints department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a gift of Richard H. Zinser. The scene illustrates the biblical parable from Luke 15: the younger son asks his father for his share of the inheritance before leaving home. The Latin band at the top quotes that request. The numeral 'I' at the upper right suggests it is probably the first plate in a series on the parable, though the source data do not confirm the full set.

Curious detailDato curioso

The artist signed the work not with his full name but with the intertwined monogram 'HSB' tucked into the lower-left corner, a compact visual signature typical of printmakers whose works circulated on paper.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause to look at how this small horizontal print was made. It is black and white on warm cream paper, but up close you see everything is built from thousands of fine parallel and crosshatched lines. That network creates shadows, volume in the fur-trimmed cloak and texture in the dotted foliage and the crenellated castle. The narrow band with the Latin inscription at the top also needs careful care, since any stain would obscure its reading. It is meticulous work from around 1540 that calls for soft light and very steady hands.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I like to read this engraving as a map of distances. In the foreground three very sharp figures fill the left and center, with details of swords, fringed boots and a pouch at the belt. Then your eye travels back: thick-trunked trees, hills, distant mountains and a tiny town. At the lower right two small travelers with knapsack and staff walk away and give us scale. That play between near and far, between the crenellated castle and the horizon, feels almost like observing the sky in layers.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This story makes me feel sad and curious. An old dad with a pointy soft hat is giving little coins to his younger son, who has puffy slashed sleeves and a big sword he holds awkwardly behind him. The son leans in eagerly with one knee bent. To one side, leaning against an arched stone doorway, another young man rests his head on his hand and looks upset, as if jealous or worried. Behind them there is a brick castle and lots of little trees. I wonder where the two tiny travelers in the corner are going.

  1. #1

Look closely: how many men appear in the foreground, in the main scene by the stone portal?

    HintPista

Look to the left and center, where a father hands something to a son while another young man leans against the wall.

  2. #2

In the lower right corner, which pair of small travelers walks away through the landscape with knapsack and staff?

    HintPista

Search for very tiny figures near plants and stones, marking the departure and the distance.

  3. #3

At the upper right of the print, which Roman numeral marks this as the first scene of the story?

    HintPista

Look at the upper band with the Latin inscription and then shift your view to the opposite upper corner.
