What you would seeLo que verías
At the center of the image, against a smooth gray background that darkens toward the top, sits a low, wide porcelain cup photographed in profile and slightly from above. Its body opens outward from a short, straight ring foot to a broad, undulating rim, giving it the silhouette of an open flower. The rim rises and falls in soft, regular lobes, like overlapping petals; fine raised lines descend from the notches between them along the outer wall, reinforcing the plant-like form. The interior is empty, smooth, and shallow, with gently curving walls that catch a diffuse light. The color is an almost uniform off-white, slightly cooler in shadow and warmer at a few points along the edge. Its surface looks satiny and very finely textured, with tiny dark specks, faint pores, and areas of barely visible crackle. The rim appears thin and delicate, with slight irregularities and a somewhat grayish edge. A soft shadow extends beneath and to the right of the foot over the flat gray surface, anchoring the object and emphasizing its lightness. No people, inscriptions, or other objects appear. Although there is no scale reference, its proportions suggest a small vessel meant to be held in the hand.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the wavy rim around the whole piece and notice how light creates small highlights and shadows on each petal. Then look at the faint lines descending along the outside wall: they turn a simple bowl into a blossom. Finally, observe the plain, undecorated white surface, where precision lies in proportion rather than ornament.
ContextContexto
This porcelain cup, held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, was made in Korea during the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910) and is dated in the source to the 1400s. Its author is unknown. According to the museum, this very rare type was produced only in the state-owned kiln for a limited period, from the late 1400s to the mid-1500s. Its shape imitates a hollyhock, a flower that opens toward the sun and therefore signified loyalty to the king. Korean royal archives cited by the museum record its use at state banquets, when the king offered wine to officials, and in tea ceremonies welcoming Chinese diplomats. It exemplifies the precision valued in early Joseon art.

This cup makes me look slowly. Its white is not pure, it is an off-white with cool shadows and tiny dark specks that reveal age. I see the very fine crackling and the thin rim, slightly grayish and uneven, as if use has gently worn it. What moves me most is the wavy rim: it rises and falls like overlapping petals and from each notch a fine relief line runs down the outer wall, making the porcelain look like an open hollyhock. It is precision and delicacy in balance.

When I look at it I think of orbits and cycles. It is a low and wide cup, like a small porcelain crater photographed from above, with a rim that ripples in even waves. Its hollyhock shape, that flower that opens following the sun, reminds me how everything turns seeking light. It is white, satin-smooth, serene, floating on a gray background that darkens above like an evening sky. I picture the king offering wine under the same logic as the cosmos: loyalty, order and a shared center.

It looks like a flower you can hold in your hands. It is whitish, short and with a rim like waves of petals going up and down. If you look from a little above it seems to be opening. On the outside it has little lines going down like the seams of the flower and inside it is smooth and empty, ready for juice or tea. I like its little shadow on one side because it looks like it is floating. I want to count how many little waves its rim has without touching it so I do not break it.

Think of a not pure white, satiny, that appears in the color list as a very light tone.
