What you would seeLo que verías
At the center of a smooth background that fades from almost black at the top to light gray below, sits a single round, squat vessel with a lid, photographed slightly from above and casting a soft shadow to the right. Its low foot ring supports a body that swells outward and curves gently inward toward the rim. The nearly flat, slightly domed lid follows the same curve and ends in a small, rounded knob shaped like a tiny bud or gourd, with a paler tip and a worn brown base. The ceramic surface is creamy beige, aged and mottled with rusty-brown speckles, fine dark lines, and areas where the glaze looks thin or worn. Around the lid, concentric circles lead the eye outward to a band of scrolling vines. Below it runs a narrow frieze of repeated triangles, like small teeth, and then, across the widest part of the body, larger flowing stems, leaves, spirals, and curls drawn in dark brown, almost black, line. The drawing is lively but orderly. Light comes from the upper left, modeling the volume without harsh shine and revealing a matte, slightly rough, earthen texture.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the tiny knob and move outward in circles, as if following ripples, until you reach the lid's edge. Then look for where the pattern changes: orderly triangles above, free-flowing vines below. Notice how the decoration respects the shape instead of covering it at random.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this is a covered jar in Sawankhalok ware, by an unknown maker, dating to the 1300s, from Thailand during the Sukhothai period, 14th century. It belongs to the Department of Indian and Southeast Asian Art at the Cleveland Museum of Art, which received it as a Gift in memory of Alex and Jeannette Gray Masterton. Sawankhalok ceramics, associated with kilns in north-central Thailand, are known for stoneware with iron-brown painted decoration under a light glaze and were widely traded in Southeast Asia. Its exact original use is not recorded; it probably served to store or protect small contents.

Curious detailDato curioso
Sawankhalok wares were exported so widely that examples have been recovered from shipwrecks across Southeast Asia, evidence of the maritime trade networks of their time.

I pause on what time has written over this 14th century Sawankhalok vessel. I see the creamy beige stoneware, mottled with rust brown stains and dark lines where the clear glaze has thinned. That band of vines in iron brown, with fluid stems and spirals, and the frieze of tiny triangles like little teeth, still live under the wear. The almost flat lid with its bud-like knob shows rubbing at its brown base. Soft light reveals a matte, slightly rough texture that speaks to me of kilns in north-central Thailand and artisan hands.

When I look at it from above, this vessel reminds me of a small flattened planet. Its round body and flat lid form a continuous horizon, crowned by that knob that looks like a tiny moon. The concentric circles on the lid are like orbits leading to the triangle frieze and then to the brown vines swirling like constellations. Against the background fading from near black to light gray, it floats in silence, lit from the upper left, like a serene world from the Sukhothai period suspended in space.

It looks like a little pumpkin with a hat! It is round and short and has a little lid with a tiny ball on top like a bud. It is creamy colored with brown speckles and has drawings of little plants with leaves and curls that go round and round. Under the lid there is a row of tiny triangles that look like crocodile teeth. I like it because it looks old and soft, with no shine, and its little shadow is off to one side. I imagine it kept tiny treasures inside, like marbles or secret candies from the 14th century.
