Fusuma panel remounted as a hanging scroll; ink and slight color on paper
What you would seeLo que verías
A tall, vertical sheet of beige paper, worn and faintly stained, fills almost the entire field of view. Most of the upper portion is empty, broken only on the left by a column of black-ink calligraphy and, beneath it, a small red seal with an irregular outline. About halfway down, also on the left, is a pale circle surrounded by a darker halo, like a mark worn into the paper. All the action is gathered at the bottom, in a diagonal band rising from left to right. A bamboo trellis, drawn with thin, dark lines, supports chrysanthemum branches with leaves in gray, ocher, and very pale pink, and small flowers that are only lightly suggested. Perched on a stem at the right is a tiny sparrow in profile, its beak open, tail tilted, and small feet gripping the support. Beside it are two round, fluffy puppies. One, white with black patches, sits facing forward with its front paws together, ears drooping, and head slightly tilted as it looks upward. The other, darker and partly hidden, peers out from the left with a low muzzle and a sleepy expression. The brushwork is loose and watery, with diluted ink creating soft fur on the porous paper.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the emptiness at the top, then let your eye travel down to the small scene gathered at the bottom. Notice how the sitting puppy's tilted head leads you toward the sparrow. Finally, look for the pale circle on the left: it changes the image once you realize it is not part of the landscape, but a trace of the painting's former use.
ContextContexto
This is a painting by Nagasawa Rosetsu (1754–1799), a Japanese artist of the Edo period, dated to about 1792–94 and now in the Cleveland Museum of Art. According to the source, it was originally a fusuma, a sliding door panel used inside a building, and was later remounted as a hanging scroll. Ink and slight color were applied to paper. In the larger original set, sparrows gathered on a trellis with flowering chrysanthemums above a litter of puppies; this panel preserves one part of that world. The building it first belonged to is not known, so its exact original setting probably cannot be reconstructed with certainty.

Curious detailDato curioso
The pale circle on the left is not a moon: it is the trace left by a hikite, the recessed pull once used to slide the fusuma door.

Look at the paper before the animals. It is beige, porous and worn, with faint stains left by time. The diluted ink makes the puppies fur look soft and watery, and the chrysanthemums in grays and ochres barely touch the surface. At the top left you see the vertical signature and the small red seal. And that pale circle with a dark halo is not a moon, it is the mark left by the door handle when this was a fusuma, a sliding door. Now it is a hanging scroll.

What grabs me is all that emptiness at the top. Most of the sheet is empty, like a night sky just before the stars appear. Only at the bottom, on a diagonal, there is life: the bamboo lattice, the pale chrysanthemums and that balance between the two puppies and the tiny sparrow with its beak open. And halfway up on the left, that pale circle with a dark halo looks like an eclipse or the trace of a planet on the paper.

Oh, the little dogs! One is white with black spots, sitting with its little paws together and its head tilted looking at the birdie like saying what are you saying? The other one is more hidden and looks really sleepy. The sparrow is super tiny standing on a little stick with its tail up. And everything is down in a little corner, as if they left a lot of empty space on top so they can breathe. I want to hug them.
