What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows, seen from directly above and filling almost the entire frame, the closed cover of a wide, horizontally oriented sketchbook, placed on a smooth, dark gray background. The cover is covered with marbled paper in a dense, wavy, almost vibrating pattern: hundreds of small scallops and feather-like marks repeat in vertical, undulating bands of deep red, burnt orange, cream, turquoise blue, brown, and black. From a distance the bands resemble waves, flames, or rows of tiny eyes; up close, each mark is slightly irregular, evidence of a handmade process. The surface looks matte and fibrous, like aged paper. The wear is concentrated at the edges: the upper right and lower center have pale, torn areas where the decorated layer is missing and a beige support shows through; the right edge is chipped and crumpled, revealing thin underlying leaves or board; the corners are softened and slightly darkened. At the far left a narrow spine, also worn, hints at the binding. The lighting is even and diffuse, with no harsh shadows except for a faint shadow beneath the book that separates it from the background and gives it a subtle sense of thickness and weight.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the whole cover as if it were a landscape of waves or feathers; then move closer to its edges. The tears, missing fragments, and exposed underlayers change the reading: this is not an abstract pattern, but a working object marked by travel and time.

ContextContexto

This is the cover of a sketchbook dated 1859 by Sanford Robinson Gifford (1823–1880), an American landscape painter associated with the second generation of the Hudson River School. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Gifford was based in New York, in the Tenth Street Studio Building, and made summer trips to the Catskills, the Adirondacks, and New England. This volume accompanied him in 1859 to New Hampshire and Maine, where he drew places such as Dixville Notch, the White Mountains, and Peaks Island in Casco Bay. His graphite studies served as the basis for oil paintings completed later in the studio.

Curious detailDato curioso

Marbled paper is made by floating pigments on a liquid surface and combing them into patterns before laying down a sheet to lift the design, so each cover decorated this way is effectively unrepeatable.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What might the contrast between this intensely colorful cover and the graphite drawings said to be inside suggest about the sketchbook as an object?¿Qué puede sugerir el contraste entre esta cubierta intensamente colorida y los dibujos en grafito que, según la fuente, contiene el cuaderno?
  2. How does knowing that this book traveled through mountains and along the coast change the way you read its worn edges?¿Cómo cambia la lectura de los bordes gastados al saber que este libro viajó por montañas y costas?
  3. If you could open it, what would you expect to find first: finished landscapes, quick notes, or traces of the journey itself?

The conservatorLa restauradora

What draws me is this marbled paper skin, with its wavy bands in dark red, burnt orange, cream, turquoise, brown and black that look like repeated scales or feathers. I see the honest wear of time: torn edges at the upper right and lower center where the beige support shows through, the nibbled right edge and softened corners. This horizontal sketchbook from 1859 traveled with Gifford in the field, so every scuff tells of a journey between New York and the mountains of New Hampshire and Maine.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

Seen from above, this closed sketchbook looks like a map of an unknown planet. The winding vertical bands recall atmospheric fronts or ocean currents seen through a telescope, with hundreds of little eyes blinking in turquoise and orange on a cream ground. Gifford, a Hudson River School landscapist, carried this volume in 1859 to the White Mountains and the Maine coast to capture light and topography in graphite. It feels as if it holds constellations of places before he returned to his studio in New York.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a dragon notebook! Its cover is full of tiny scales making waves and flames in red, orange, cream and turquoise blue, like lots of little eyes staring at you. If you look close, each spot is a bit wobbly because it was made by hand. It is old and nibbled at the edges, with light scratches where the beige inside shows. I picture Gifford carrying it in 1859 to the mountains to draw, closing it carefully so his graphite drawings would not fly away.
